    Entropy

    It is a term used in information theory to


    describe the uncertainty surrounding
    an event and information about that
    event. Uncertainty and information are
    closely related. Entropy is the
    minimum when complete certainty
    exists regarding the actual outcome of
    an event.

    Information Overload
    Advances in It are making information
    system more user-friendly than ever
    before.
    Information overload is a state when
    user is presented with too much
    information. Overload causes a barrier
    to understanding the information
    presented and confuses the user. It will
    be impossible to find out which
    information is relevant

    Data need to be collected from various


    records, measurements and
    observation made from the
    environment. In order to store and use
    it efficiently, it is required to sort the
    data.

    Data reduction can be effected in 2
    ways:

    Transformation : effects reduction by


    changing the physical form in which
    data exists thus saving storage space
    or through more effective data
    transmission.

    size of data. It is a technique that saves
    storage space by eliminating the gaps,
    empty fields, redundancy.

    Information filtering
    Sophisticated information system
    convert the vast data resources into
    information easily and quickly. If such
    information is presented without
    checking its relevance to a decision
    maker, he will be faced with an
    information deluge. If too much
    information is presented to a person,
    he might experience an information
    overload.

    trims irrelevant information before it
    reaches the managers.

    information. Organizations have
    systems to scan information at every
    level controlling its flow upwards.

    Data Summerisation reduces the volume


    of data for transmission without
    affecting its essential meaning.
    Classification is a formal way of
    summarisation of data

    Inferences

    Inferences are drawn usually from a


    large volume of data and such
    inferences are communicated in places
    of the original data. This reduces the
    volume of data transmission. The
    quality of inference depends on a
    persons ability to see patterns, trends
    and relationships in the data available.
