3 The Seasons BY AMEERUL HAZEEQ

What are Hemispheres?
The Earth is divided into two hemispheres, separated by the equator.

Northern Hemisphere & Southern Hemisphere

Equator
An axis is an invisible line around which an object rotates, or spins

The earth has axis.

The earth axis is the imaginary line that penetrate through the centre of the earth from north pole to
south pole.
Why does the earth axis tilted?
The earth axis is tilted 23.5° from the centre.

This is because large amounts of land mass and ice Heavy

sheets in the Northern Hemisphere make Earth top-
heavy

The gravitational pull from the moon prevent the

Earth from tilting further.
What causes seasons?
The earth rotate (orbit) around the sun
causes different season.

4 Seasons. They are Summer, Autumn,

Winter and Spring.

Earth takes 365 days to complete one

rotation (orbit) around the sun.
Spring

Don’t get confused: Summer Winter

Earth rotate around sun to produce different season.

This happen in 365 days (1 year)

Autumn

Earth spins around it’s axis to produce different day

(day and night). This happen in 24 hours (1 day)
Why does northern and southern
hemisphere experience different season?
Due to the tilt in Earth’s axis.

The earth experience different season at different hemisphere.

This is because different hemisphere will face the sun longest at different time.

Example:

Because the earth is tilted, when the northern hemisphere faces the sun (tilted towards the sun), the
southern hemisphere will face away from the sun (tilted away from the sun).

Thus, the northern hemisphere will face the sun longer (during summer).
Spring

Northern hemisphere faces

Northern hemisphere faces the
away from the sun. Thus, it has
sun more frequent. Thus, it has
less sunlight in a day (winter)
mores sunlight in a day
(summer)
Southern hemisphere faces the
sun more frequently. Hence, it
Southern hemisphere faces
as more sunlight in a day
away from the sun. Hence, it as
(summer)
less sunlight in a day (winter)

Autumn
When northern hemisphere experience summer, southern hemisphere experience winter.

This may confuse on the usage of season. Therefore, since northern hemisphere is heavier, we prioritise
Season in northern hemisphere.

Example, if country (UK or Denmark) in the northern hemisphere experience summer,

then we call that particular period of the year as summer.

Hence,
• June will be summer (referring to summer in the northern hemisphere)
• December is winter (referring to winter in the northern hemisphere).
Amount of heat a country receive depends on how high is the sun.

During summer, the Earth is tilted towards the sun. Therefore, the sun appear high in the sky (right on top).

During winter, the Earth is tilted away from the sun. (So the sun appear to be shy). Hence, sun is low in the sky.
