INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING
Drawing
A drawing is a graphical representation of an object, or a part of it, and is
the result of creative thought by an artist, engineer or technician.

Engineering Drawing
The engineering drawing, on the other hand, is not subtle, or abstract. It
does not require an understanding of its creator, only an understanding of
engineering drawings. Therefore, an engineering drawing often contains
more than just a graphical representation of its subject. It also contains
dimensions, notes and specifications.
INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING

 Drawing is the language of engineers. An engineer must be well

conversant with drawings.
 Drawing represent the reduce shape of the structures and owner
visualizes what is going to be happen.
 Drawing provides instructions and guidance to architects, engineers
and workmen at field to construct the structure according to the
dimension shown in the drawings.
PRIME REQUIREMENTS OF GOOD DRAWINGS

 It should be simple, clear and clean.

 It should give exact information so that work can be carried out at site
without scaling for missing measurement.
 Notes on the drawing should be held in the minimum to support the
drawing.
 Ample space should be provided between views to permit placing of
dimensions without crowding.
 All secondary lines should be light & all the primary line should be dark.
TYPES OF DRAWINGS
Artistic Drawing: Artistic drawings
range in scope from the most
simple line drawings to the most
famous paintings. This type of
drawings is used to express feelings,
belief, philosophies and idea of an
artist.

Technical Drawing: A technical drawing is

a means of clearly and consciously
communicating all of the information
necessary to transform an idea or a concept
into reality. Therefore, technical drawing is
just a graphical representation of its subject.

DRAWING SCALES
Scale is a ratio between the linear dimension of a drawn representation of
an object and the actual object.

SCALE 1:20
Actual
10 mm
Drawing
200 mm

Designation of a scale consists of the word “SCALE” followed by the

indication of its ratio, as follows
SCALE 1:1 for full size
SCALE X:1 (X > 1) for an enlargement scales
SCALE 1:X (X > 1) for a reduction scales
ELEMENTS OF ENGINEERING DRAWING
Graphics language: Describe a shape (mainly).
Word language: Describe an exact size, location and specification of the
object.
WORD LANGUAGE
Lettering Techniques
 Use all CAPITAL LETTERS.
 Use even pressure to draw precise, clean lines.
 Use one stroke per line.
 Horizontal Strokes are drawn left to right.
 Vertical Strokes are drawn downward.
 Curved strokes are drawn top to bottom in one
continuous stroke on each side.
 Use The Single-stroke, Gothic Style of Lettering.
 Always Skip A Space Between Rows Of Letters.
 Always Use Very Light Guide Lines. .
 Fractions Are Lettered Twice the Height Of Normal
Letters.
 Fraction Bars Are Always Drawn Horizontal.
 Use a Medium Lead For Normal Lettering.
 Use a Hard Lead For Drawing Guide Lines.

Parallel Dimensioning
Parallel dimensioning consists of several dimensions originating from one
projection line.

Combined Dimensions
A combined dimension uses both chain and parallel dimensioning.

PROJECTIONS
The production of a two-dimensional
image of a three-dimensional object
ORTHOGRAPHIC PROJECTIONS
Orthographic Projections are a collection
of 2-D drawings that work together to
give an accurate overall representation
of an object

The 6 views of projection include:

 FRONT
 RIGHT SIDE
 TOP
 BOTTOM
 LEFT SIDE
 REAR
ASSIGNMENT 2
1. Define Building. What are the types of building?
2. Briefly describe the components of building

BUILDING DRAWINGS
ORIENTATION OF THE BUILDING
Orientation means, arranging various rooms of a building in such a way that
maximum use of natural agencies like sun, air etc. could be made for obtaining
the comfortable conditions inside the building

• It is also cared in orientation that occupants of the building are not subjected
to unhygienic conditions
• For maintaining good ventilation inside the buildings, longer side of building
should be exposed to wind direction. Wind normally blows from south-west
direction, hence, facing the building in south-west or north-east direction is
advantageous
BUILDING DRAWING
1. Plan of building
2. Sectional details of building
3. Elevation of building
Plan
• A horizontal section of building at given height seen from top
• The building has been cut down by a horizontal plane at the sill level of the
window and is seen from the top after removal of cut part
Section
• It’s a vertical section
• Imagined that a finished buildings is cut vertically along a line so that the
building is separated into two portions along the imagined vertical plane right
from the top of the building to the lowest part of foundation
Elevation
• Outward view of a completed building along any side of the building
