W hat is
Epiphany?
– “Epiphany” means “manif estation.”
– It comes from Greek roots that mean "to show, to
display" (phainein) and "on, to" (epi-).
– An epiphany is thus a time when something is
shown, displayed, or manifested to an audience.
The Magi Visit the Messiah
Matthew 2:1-12
When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the
days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east
arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is the newborn
king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and
have come to do him homage.”
The Magi Visit the Messiah
Matthew 2:1-12
When King Herod heard this, he was greatly
troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Assembling all
the chief priests and the scribes of the people, He
inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
The Magi Visit the Messiah
Matthew 2:1-12
They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it
has been written through the prophet: And you,
Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least
among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall
come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel.”
The Magi Visit the Messiah
Matthew 2:1-12
Then Herod called the magi secretly and ascertained
from them the time of the star ’s appearance. He
sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search
diligently for the child. When you have found him,
bring me word, that I too may go and do him
homage.”
The Magi Visit the Messiah
Matthew 2:1-12
After their audience with the king they set out. And
behold, the star that they had seen at its rising
preceded them, until it came and stopped over the
place where the child was. They were overjoyed at
seeing the star,

and on entering the house they saw the child with
Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did
him homage. Then they opened their treasures and
offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And
having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod,
they departed for their country by another way.

Background to the Feast of the
Epiphany

Epiphany is the manifestation of Jesus

as the Messiah/Savior of all men,
including the pagans of goodwill,
represented by the Magi.
Background to the Feast of the
Epiphany

As such, it is also the manifestation of

the divine plan, hidden for centuries
in God to unite all human beings in
Christ.
Background to the Feast of the
Epiphany
In many European countries it is the Epiphany,
rather than Christmas (Feast of the Nativity), is the
day of gift-giving.
This is in
commemoration of the
gifts of the Magi taken
from Matthew 2:1-12.
Background to the Feast of the
Epiphany
It is generally believed that the three “kings” were
actually astrologers following an unusual star. Had
these three men been kings, they were likely to
have brought escorts
rather than travelling
alone.

When is Epiphany
– celebrated?
This varies from country to country.
– In some countries, Epiphany is a holy day of obligation
(Canon 1246,1). Where that is the case, it is celebrated on
Jan. 6.
– In the United States, Epiphany is not a holy day of
obligation, and its celebration is transf erred to the first
Sunday after Jan. 1
Background to the Feast of the
Epiphany

The Epiphany is a celebration of the

‘revelation’ of God in human flesh. Today
the Epiphany is celebrated on the Sunday
between January 2nd and 8th while the
actual feast day occurs on January 6th.
What is Epiphany all about?

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

The Epiphany is the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of
Israel, Son of God and Saviour of the world. The great
feast of Epiphany celebrates th adoration of Jesus by
the wise men (magi) from the East, together with his
baptism in the Jordan and the wedding feast at Cana in
Galilee.
Interpretation of the Visit of
the Magi
The story of the Visit of the Magi makes an
important point about the role of the Messiah.
Jesus is called “the newborn king of the Jews” by
the magi who travel from the east. These men
were not Jewish yet they paid homage to the King
of the Jews.
Interpretation of the Visit of
the Magi
Magi is a Greek term used to indicate a special
category/class of learned men from Eastern
countries who
were not Jews.

Why did they go to
Herod?
– Probably, because they assumed the newborn king would be a son
of Herod — the cur rent “king of the Jews.” Pope Benedict
comments:
– It is quite natural that their search for the newborn king of the Jews
should take them to Israel’s roya l city and to the king’s palace. That,
surely, is where the future king must have been born (Jesus of
Nazareth: The Infancy Nar ratives)
– This, of course, played into Herod's paranoia for his throne and led
to the slaughter of the innocents.
Interpretation of the Visit of
the Magi
The Gospel does not call the Magi “Kings,”
nor does it say
that they were
three
More importantly, the visit
of the magi fulfilled the
prophecies of the Old
Testament: Balaam
prophesied about the
coming Messiah marked
by a star: “I see him,
though not now; I behold
him, though not near: A
star shall advance from
Jacob and a staff shall rise
from Israel…” (Numbers
24:17).
Psalm 72 speaks of how the
Gentiles will come to worship the
Messiah: “The kings of
Tarshish and the Isles shall
offer gifts, the kings of
Arabia and Sebashall
bring tribute. All kings shall pay
Him homage, all nations shall
serve Him” (72:10-11).
Isaiah also prophesied
the gifts: “Caravans of
camels shall fill you,
dromedaries from
Midian and Ephah; all
from Sheba shall come
bearing gold and
frankincense, and
proclaiming the praises
of the Lord” (Isaiah
60:6).
Interpretation of the Visit of
the Magi
Matthew, who wrote to a Jewish audience, hoped
to express the universal role of Christ in this story.
These men were
foreigners but they
honored Jesus as
their king.
Interpretation of the Visit of
the Magi
Herod, who is not an heir of
King David and not the
rightful King of the Jews, was
threatened by this new king
and attempted kill him.
Ninos Inocentes: Feast of the
Holy Innocents
Interpretation of the Visit of
the Magi
This reveals another important theme
of the Gospels: Jesus was not to
become a political King of the Jews to
dethrone Herod or even the emperor;
he was to usher in a new kingdom
that extended beyond political
regimes.

Chalking the door
Chalking the door
Either on Twelfth Night (January 5), the twelfth
day of Christmastide and eve of the feast of the
Epiphany, or on Epiphany Day (January 6) itself, many
Christians: (including Anglicans, Lutherans,
Methodists, Presbyterians and Roman Catholics,
among others) chalk their doors with a pattern such
as this, "20 † C † M † B † 21"
Chalking the door
with the numbers referring "to the calendar year (20
and 21, for instance, for this year, 2021);
the crosses stand for Christ; and the letters have a
two-fold significance: C, M and B are the initials for
the traditional names of the Magi (Caspar, Melchior
and Balthasar)
Chalking the door
C, M and B = they are also an
abbreviation of the Latin blessing Christus
mansionem benedicat, which
means, May Christ bless this house."
