“MANDAYA”
• “Man” means first.
• “daya” which literally means “upstream”
or “upland”.
•  “first people upstream”
• is the ethnic tribe of Davao Oriental (and
in some parts of Surigao Del Sur), the
southeastern part of the Philippines.

LIVELIHOOD
• The Mandayas are shifting cultivators who rely
largely on swidden farming also known as
(slash-and-burn) as a means for survival.

• Their other means of livelihood include fishing,


food gathering, hunting, and the planting of
abaca as a cash crop.
MANGKATADONG

• One of their primary roles is to settle conflicts.


• Ensures that crisis and problems are resolved.
• Presides over decisions on grave offenses detrimental to human
dignity.
 PAGLUGAY- incestuous affair
 PAGDAKOP SANG BOBAY- abduction of a soon to be married woman.
 PAGBIYA SANG TYANAS DA- abandonment of a fiancée.
 YAGALABI, YAGALATA- adultery
 ELOPEMENT- to run away with a lover.
PUNISHMENTS:
-determined by the nature and gravity of the offense.

 BALLUKAS- Paying moral damage.

 DALIKOP- Death Penalty ( rape, incest)


BALYAN
• Mediator between the people and the spirit .
• Has the capacity to heal the sick through panawagtawag
(prayer and use of herbal medicine).
 KALLALAYSAN (highest rank among Balyan)
-able to heal a terminal patient who is about to die.

 Mandaya warrior.
 usually the bravest man in
the kin group and was
noted for the number of
persons.
 In order to become a
Bagani, he should have
killed 7-10 persons.

 Mandaya keep their close relationship with nature and


reverence to Magbabaya (Almighty).
 Ancestors defended the land and cared for the earth.
 They believe that life should never be wasted.
 Beliefs , laws and practices nurtured life and ensure that
nature, the source of life will not lose its balance and
soundness.

Traditional Practices
• During conception, the husband is usually most generous to the wishes of
his wife.
• On the third month of pregnancy, the hilot or yanagamon (local midwife)
is invited to start the monthly massage.
• No rites accompany the act of name giving. The father observes any
event during child birth and names the child accordingly. For example, if
the child is born during an earthquake, it is called Linog.
• When the child is one year old, the head is shaved, and the hair wrapped
and kept on the roof. It must be noted that the hair must neither be
intentionally disposed of nor used as toys. Throwing away the hair
signifies a lack of love and affection for the child.
