“Health is a state of complete physical,
mental, and social well being, not merely
the absence of disease or infirmity” (WHO,
1947)
 Is a disease or period of sickness affecting the
body or mind.

 Health is interpreted as the absence of signs
and symptoms of disease or injury; thus the
opposite of health is disease.

 Dunn defined this model as “ health a a


relatively passive state of freedom from illness,
and a condition of relative homeostasis”.
 Health and illness are seen as relative concept
and not separate absolutes.
 Health and illness as a graduated scale has two
ends
 Health is a dynamic state that fluctuates as a
person adapts to change in the internal and
external environments to maintain a state well-
being.
 This model is used primarily in describing
causes if illness rather than in promoting
wellness.

 It helps in identifying risk factors that result


from interaction of agent-host-environment.

 Self-Concept: incorporates how the person

 Generally rapid onset of symptoms
 Last only relatively short time

Illness Behaviors
Stage 1: Experiencing symptoms
Stage 2: Assuming sick role
Stage 3: Assuming dependent role
Stage 4: achieving recovery & rehab
Physical and mental alterations in health WITH
one or more of the following:
 Permanent change
 Causes or is caused by, irreversible alterations
in normal anatomy and physiology
 Requires special ed for rehab
 Requires long period of care or support
The World Health Organization
(WHO) defines health promotion as a
process of enabling people to
increase control over and to improve
their health (WHO, 1986).
