BOAT DOCKING AREA:

An enclosed area of water in a port for the loading, unloading, and repair of ships.
Your dock should be sized for its intended use. Docks constructed along the
coast should extend to the 4 foot depth contour or as necessary to allow boat
access. Docks constructed along a canal may not extend more than 6 feet into
the canal. Cantilevered docks constructed on suitable canal walls do not
require pilings and often meet the needs of residential dockowners.

SAILING BOATS:
Sailing boats are powered by sails using the force of the wind.
There are lots of different types of sailing boats, which are also
referred to as sailboats, sailing dinghies, sailing yachts and
simply, yachts. Sailing boats range in size, from lightweight
dinghies, such as the Optimist dinghy (2.36m) all the way up to
superyachts as large as 90 metres in length. There is a far
broader spectrum of sailing boats than vehicles on our roads,
which can make choosing an appropriate first boat appear to
be a daunting task. Cars are all a similar width and range in
length from the 2.5 metre Smart Car to the 8.5 metre stretched
limo. However, sailing boats encompass a huge range of sizes
and may have one, two or even three hulls.

Types of sailing boats

There are many different types of boats for sailing, differentiated by the following distinctive characteristics:
Hull type: monohull, catamaran or trimaran
Keel type: fin keel, wing keel, bilge keel, daggerboard, or centreboard; lifting keel, long keelRudder type: keel hung,
skeg hung, transom hung, spade, twin rudders
Mast configuration and sails: masthead sloop, fractional sloop, ketch, schooner, yawl, cutter, cat rig

SAILING ACADEMY
WELSH NATIONAL SAILING ACADEMY,UK
• Architect : Ellis Williams Architects
• Area:1600 sqm
• The Welsh National Sailing Academy,
Pwllheli was conceived to achieve
two clear objectives: to provide
Wales with a state-of-the-art
international centre of excellence for
sailing and to provide the local
community with a flexible multi-
purpose event venue.
• Working closely with the Academy
and Gwynedd County Council, Ellis
Williams Architects made Everlite
Concept’s Danpalon polycarbonate
cladding and roofing panel system a
key component in its innovative
building design.
WELSH NATIONAL SAILING ACADEMY
REQUIREMENTS:
Situated on an exposed North Wales
peninsula between the Irish Sea and the
Afon Erch river estuary, the Academy
building project presented the architects
with a unique set of design challenges:
• Although with a predominantly south-
westerly bias, the strong coastal wind
directions the building needed to
contend with were highly variable.
• It also needed to provide easy access
for four distinct visitor groups: the
general public, sailors, the sailing
boats and event delivery vehicles.
• A central multi-purpose space was
needed that would be able to
accommodate fully rigged sailing
boats and provide a high level of
natural light for preparing boats and
scrutinising by competition judges.
WELSH NATIONAL SAILING ACADEMY
SOLUTIONS
• Based on the classic principle of ‘form following
function’, Ellis Williams Architects produced a unique
spiral building design centred on a large circular main
hall, enabling boats to be towed in and out with ease
while being protected from the variable wind
conditions.
• Curved public terraces overlooking sailing
competitions in the bay are situated to the more
sheltered north western side, with a glazed café area
offering stunning panoramic views of both the bay and
the Snowdonia National Park beyond. On the opposite
side, a bar and terrace looks out towards the marina.
• Crucially, in order to maximise the amount of natural
daylight entering the circular main hall and the public
viewing gallery above, the architect specified Everlite’s
Danpalon® translucent polycarbonate panel cladding
system for both the curved hall façade and the round
hall roof.
WELSH NATIONAL SAILING ACADEMY
• The building has been
SOLUTIONS partially buried, as if engulfed
by grassed sand dunes which,
with their terraced
continuations, create an
amphitheatre.
• Above it all sits the
observation and control
tower, from where race starts
and finishes can be organized
and monitored.
• Polycarbonate clads the upper
portion of the drum of the
unheated main hall to give
diffused light; below gabion
baskets are filled with local
stone.
• The balconies and areas of
cladding are faced with
carefully detailed Kebony.
Construction

MA Steel (Material Applications

The project is linked to the

stone jetty spanning
longitudinally over the
promenade in the north side of
the beach. The structure
seemingly levitates from the
ground, standing gently in the
sand, as if it were a catamaran.
Due to the limited dimensions
of the school and its facilities it
is necessary the interposing of a
larger element to create more
visibility for the building..

The pergola, constructed in

front of the school, unifies
all the project elements
while also creating a
shaded threshold, covering
the exterior from direct sun
exposure, stretching
towards the southern end
of the building. Seen from a
distance, the school
becomes a landmark near
the port entrance.

The school is constructed with galvanized steel and

bolted connections as the primary structure. The
organization of the structural elements creates a series
of rhythms in the façades strengthening its nautical and
weightless character. The member´s room opens to the
north and south sides by means of operable glass walls,
accessible from the beach, allowing spatial continuity
and cross ventilation. All the other enclosure elements in
the walls, floors and ceiling are made in wood-cement
fiber panels that ensure both structural durability and
performance against the harsh climates from the sea
and inclement weather. In the same way, the pergola in
the south is built with a galvanized steel structure and a
tensile system that holds up a willow reed cover that
echoes its context..

The blocks were kept long and low to fit into
Lake Michigan's immense horizon and to
allow future buildings behind to enjoy
shoreline views. Their rugged concrete
walls are embossed by the rough boards
that made them, leaving horizontal ridges
that create gentle shadow play and hint at
clapboards weathering in the sun. The
sailing program's competitive athletic core
is blazoned by translucent plastic panels of
deep purple, NU's official color, that fold
upward or slide sideways to open directly to
the beach launch area with its Astroturf
carpet for drying sails---revealing a view of
the Chicago skyline 12 miles to the south
during the sailing season and then
buttoning up the building, piled high with
stored boats and gear, for the winter.

Ocean Pool
The ocean pool: a mirror in the sand

With its bay-like configuration, the sea pool opens its

arms to the sea. In high tides it blends with the
ocean, in low tides the sea recedes while the pool
retains the water and becomes a mirror in the sand. It
allows bathing all through the year in any weather
condition. It offers the amazing experience of bathing
in a haven of placid water even when the sea around
is agitated. Winter bathing has become increasingly
popular in Denmark. The pool has been provided
with an access ramp and different depths, allowing
access in wheelchair as well as sheltered bathing for
children.
