Global Overview

 Teenage pregnancy has remained one of the major


causes of school drop outs among girls in Zambia
 The Ministry is alive to this fact
 Although there are policies in place such as the re-
entry policy, free education and alike, Teenage
pregnancies are rising to levels that challenging for
the ministry.
The Challenge
 Total Fertility Rate (increasing from 5.9 in 2002 to
6.2 in 2007)
 Maternal Mortality (one of the highest in the region
591 per 100,000 live births)
 Teenage Pregnancy (3rd highest in Sub-Sahara
Africa 143 per 1000 15-19 years old girls, School
dropouts due to pregnancy 17,600 in 2012)
 Early Marriages
Adolescence birth rate

 Zambia has the 5th highest adolescent birth rate in


Sub-Saharan Africa.
 ZDHS of 2007, 28% of adolescent girls in Zambia
become pregnant before the age of 18.
 In addition, according to the 2010 census of
population and housing, the adolescent birth rate in
Zambia stands at 146 births per 1000 women aged
15 to 19 years
What is the impact?

 Teenage pregnancies often have health, economic and social


risks both for young mothers and their babies, as well as for
the wider communities they live in.
 As the UNFPA (2013) World Population Day message:
“Adolescent pregnancy is not just a health issue. It is deeply
rooted in poverty, gender inequality, violence, forced, child
marriage, power imbalances between girls and their partners,
lack of education, and the failure of systems and institutions
that otherwise should be protecting their rights”.
 Zambia being a signatory to the CRC means that, we are
obligated to protect our young people and ensure that they
reach their full potential and become productive citizens.

 Low Levels of Knowledge on Sexual and


Reproductive Health and Correct Contraceptive use
and methods.
 Early sexual debut and early marriage
 Limited Availability and Access to Youth Friendly
Health Services – Including Family Planning Services
 Poverty, Transactional Sex, Unprotective Environments
and Alcohol Use
 Socio-Cultural Beliefs and Customs

What Ministry and partners are doing
?
 The curriculum has been revised, piloted in 2013 and
now being implemented as from January, 2014
 Comprehensive Sexuality Education has been
integrated starting at grade five to twelve.
 Narrowing the knowledge gap that exists between
teachers and learners.
 Strengthening linkage with stake holders on youth
friendly corners.
 Increase networking and collaboration with partners
 Increase resource allocation towards a sustainable Life
Skills based Comprehensive Sexuality Education
programme

 Strengthening CSE in the Teacher Education
Curriculum
 Life skills framework has been developed
 Support materials developed for Life skills
Education from grade 1 to 9
 Lesson models on integration of life skills have been
developed and piloted in 2013 in five provinces
Steps forward…
 Training teachers on effective methodology on the
delivery of CSE
 Develop teaching and learning materials
 Push for the Integration of CSE in lessons and this is
why we are here
 Orientation of teachers on the lesson models
 Sharing the new learning
 To support the incorporation of the sensitive
indicators into the main standards monitoring tool
Policy makers have a part to play too
