WHAT IS HCI
Human computer interface, often known as HCI , a socio technological
discipline whose goal is to bring the power of computers and communication
systems to people and forms that they both are accessible and useful for our
learning, working , communicating and recreational lives.
DESIGN OF HCI
Early focus on user(s) and task(s)

Establish how many users are needed to perform the task(s) and determine who the appropriate users
should be.

Empirical measurement

Test the interface early on with real users who come in contact with the interface on a daily basis. Keep
in mind that results may vary with the performance level of the user and may not be an accurate
depiction of the typical human-computer interaction.

Iterative design

After determining the users, tasks, and empirical measurements to include, perform the following
iterative design Steps:
Design the user interface
Test
Analyze results

MULTIMODAL HCI SYSTEM
 Combination of multiple modalities, or usage of more than one independent
channel signals for the interaction between a user and a machine is termed as
multimodal human computer interaction system (MMHCI).

 A multimodal interface acts as a facilitator of human-computer interaction via two

or more modes of input.

 It is easy to use by disabled people.

 A classic example of a multimodal system is the “Put That There” demonstration

system.
TYPES OF INTERFACES

COMMAND LINE INTERFACE(CLI)

 A CLI Displays a “Prompt”, the user types a command on the keyboard, The
Computer executes the Command and provide Textual Output.
MENU DRIVEN INTERFACE

The User has a List of items to choose from, and can make selection by
highlighting one.
GRAPHICAL USER
INTERFACE

 TEXT-BASED USER INTERFACES REQUIRING COMMANDS TO BE TYPED ON

THE KEYBOARD.
GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE(GUI)
 Uses windows, Icons, Menus, and Pointers(WIMP) which can be
manipulated by a mouse (and often to an extent by a
keyboard).

 Graphical User Interface, a GUI (pronounced as either G-U-I or gooey)

allows the use of icons or other visual indicators to interact with electronic
devices, rather than using only text via the command line. For example,
all versions of Microsoft Windows utilize a GUI, whereas MS-DOS does not.
The GUI was first developed at Xerox PARC by Alan Kay, Douglas
Engelbart, and a group of other researchers in 1981. Later, Apple
introduced the Lisa computer, the first commercially available computer,
on January 19, 1983.
 What are the benefits of GUI- Unlike a command line operating system or CUI, like
Unix or MS-DOS , GUI operating system are much easier to learn and use.
Commands do not need to be memorized.

How does the user interact with a GUI- Typically the user uses a pointing device
such as the Mouse to interact and use most aspects of the GUI. However, it is also
possible to interact with a GUI using a Keyboard or other input devices.

ADVANTAGES

Changing Computers – Internet, Personal Computers and Web Browsers

are three big inventions of HCI without these three our today would not
have been possible.

GUI To Gestures – GUIs has changed the way of interaction between

computer and user.

Handset To The World In Our Hand – handset are the best mode of
communications throughout the world. These days this is not just mobile
phone but it has many other advantages such means of entertainment ,
media etc.
APPLICATIONS
 Intelligent Homes/Offices

 Driver Monitoring

 Helping People with Disabilities

Helping People with Disabilities

 A good application of multimodal systems is to address and assist disabled people.

 In this system users can interact with machine using voice and head movements.

 Two modalities are used and both are active continuously: speech and head movements.

 Speech provides the needed information about the meaning of the action that must be
performed with an object selected by the cursor.

 The head position indicates the coordinates of the cursor on the screen at the current
moment.
CONCLUSION

 Quality of system depends on how it is represented and used by user

 Therefore, enormous amount of attention has been paid to better

designs of HCI.

 Virtual reality can be the common interface in future.

 UBICOMP is trying to embed the technology in the environment and

make it invisible at the same time.

 Natural and Neural Interfaces are the future of Human-Computer input

interfaces.
