St. Johns mission is to nurture all people in their spiritual growth, in their Christian education, and in their relationship with God. The Rev. Salin Low, Rector July 2012

Dont want to be a battleground state or church

We are already getting a daily (at least) dose of presidential politics, not to mention the senatorial race and other more local contests. As we move through the summer, the intensity will build until we will be completely inundated by Labor Day through the election in November. The only saving grace, at least as far as ads for the presidency are concerned, is that so far Connecticut is considered safe for the Democrats. Whether or not one agrees with Democratic policies, safe states of either partys persuasion are being spared the blitz of ads that are already being poured into states where both sides think there is a chance of winning. I dont know how those states residents can hear themselves think. Maybe thats the point: dont think; just react. Laid over the presidential race, for Episcopalians, is that the second week in July will also be our General Convention, the national assembly of the church which is held once every three years. While no one runs ads about the various issues which will be discussed and possibly decided at this gathering, if the matters are contentious enough, they are likely to get news coverage. And when the news organizations try to cover what is going on in the church, not only are there likely to be facts left out or distorted; there seems to be an aim these days to make the church seem to be at war with itself, unable to get past its own internal squabbles to meet the spiritual and temporal needs of the world in which it finds itself. I dont know how this General Convention will proceed, whether or not it will get a lot of press for its deliberations. What I do know is that we are meant to think about the decisions made by the bishops and deputies to the convention, rather than to react to sensational stories. Certainly these are challenging times for the church, with cultural shifts making it harder for people to find time to be in church and with the constant stream of diverse messages and media making it more difficult for Gods message of love and acceptance to be heard by those in need. It is up to us to be aware of decisions made at convention and then to put them into the context of all that the church has been and is called to be in the future. Surely a community of faith is a good place to discuss ideas, to consider how the church is responding to the world around us. However, the church is not meant to be a battleground, a place where we take sides against one another. It is meant to be a place where we act together in love and concern to make Gods world more what he would have it be.

Go with a group to take dinner to an AIDS residence in Hartford. Each month a group from St. Johns coordinates and serves a meal. We generally arrive about 5:00 PM and dine with the residents at 5:30 PM, returning to St. Johns around 7:00 PM. The residents are responsible for set-up and clean-up. The Marek Family will coordinate the July meal. Laura & Bruce Wearne will coordinate the August Meal. Please let them know if you would like to help. Contact Denise Adessa with questions about this ongoing outreach project.

Remember there is a childrens corner in the back of the church. Activity bags and picture Bibles are available in that area and in the nursery for bored folks of all ages. Were looking for teachers for the class teams in the fall. Contact Linda Snyder (738-9029) or speak with the rector.

On June 3 we celebrated the work of the church schoolteachers and students. Of course, the meant a picnic to follow.

On June 10 we hosted community volunteers who give so much to make this a safe and caring place to live. It took a lot of work by St. Johns volunteers to make it happen. Those who came seemed to have a great time.

On June 9 Zachary Marek, left, was awarded the Eagle Scout recognition by the Boy Scouts, which was the culmination of a great deal of work. It was an honor for the ceremony to be held at St. Johns. Younger brother Austin, pictured on the right, is now working on his project to achieve the same level of distinction. Well done.
