6 SMALL HISTORIC TOWNS
A certain Gottlieb Biedermeier in his ca-
pacity of invented literary figure lent his
name to an entire epoch and is considered
the epitome of this era, its people and life-
style. Baden bei Wien is Biedermeier through
and through and a nostalgic place. Zest for
life, entertainment and fun are the dominat-
ing forces; the town hosts the biggest casi-
no of Central Europe, a modern Roman spa
and an operetta theatre renowned far beyond
Austrias borders. Wine, culture, roses, golf,
health, games and conferences thats life in
Baden bei Wien!
WHAT HISTORY TELLS US
First mentioned in the year 869 under the
name Padun, Baden was given town status by
Emperor Friedrich III in 1480. Viticulture and
spa baths are the most important pillars of the
towns economy. Turkish invasions and major
fires destroyed the centre of town that was to
be rebuilt completely in the Biedermeier period.
Architecture, art and horticulture blossomed
during this era. Architects, such as Carl von
Moreau, Josef Kornhusel and Otto Wagner left
their marks on the town with their noble man-
sions, palaces or beautiful squares. Between 1803
and 1834, the imperial court spent the summers
in the Baden summer residence. At the time of
the Vienna Congress the spa town played a pro-
minent role in Europe, and between the wars it
was the most important spa resort in Austria.
CULTURAL TREASURES TO EXPLORE
Main square with town hall, the Emperors
house and the Trinity Colum.
Josefsplatz square with Frauenbad and
Josefsbad, and the Florastckl right around
the corner.
Badens museums, such as the Kaiser-Franz-
Joseph museum, the Rollett museum, the pup-
pet and toy museum or Beethoven house. New
in Baden: The Arnulf Rainer museum in the
historic Frauenbad!
Grand Casino Baden, once a famous, noble
place where spa guests dined, it is now a mod-
ern event centre and casino.
Rmertherme Baden spa promises Caribbe-
an atmosphere in the 900 m
2
of water under
Europes biggest glass roof.
The Thermalstrandbad beach offers the am-
bience of an imperial lido with a vast sandy
beach.
The harness racing track hosts international
trotting races in historic surroundings.
In the Rosarium in Doblhoff park 20,000 roses
bloom twice a year a scented dream!

8 SMALL HISTORIC TOWNS
There are many places in Austria where you
can still feel the imperial atmosphere. But
nowhere else can this special time in Austrian
history be better felt than here, in the middle
of the Salzkammergut region. The Hapsburg
family selected Bad Ischl to spend their sum-
mers and to find peace and quiet away from
their duties at court. For more than 175 years,
Bad Ischl has been a health resort for prob-
lems of the respiratory system, heart/circu-
lation and the locomotor system. The woods
nearby, the rustic pastures and the mountain
tops have since the turn of the century been
popular destinations for extended walks. Cof-
fee and cake at the famous Zauner caf or an
evening with a Lhar operetta in the towns
theatre are a must here.
WHAT HISTORY TELLS US
Emperor Franz Josef and Empress Sisi they
are inseparably linked with Bad Ischl. In 1823,
Austrias first saltwater spa was opened and only
four years later princess Sophie and Franz Josefs
mother came for a health treatment to Bad Ischl.
In the years to come, four salt princes were
born. Franz Josefs first visit to Bad Ischl was in
1849. Here he celebrated his engagement to his
later wife, Elisabeth. At the turn of the century,
many famous personalities, aristocrats, heads of
state and artists came to Ischl, including Franz
Lhar who composed 24 operettas in this town.
Bad Ischl received health resort status in 1929.
CULTURAL TREASURES TO EXPLORE
The Kaiservilla, the Imperial Mansion, idyl-
lic residence of the Hapsburgs surrounded by a
grand park. Today, it attracts sightseers just as
in the past.
The Lharvilla was the preferred residence of
the operetta composer and he spent nearly ev-
ery summer here until his death in 1948.
The Museum of the town where Franz Josef
and Sisi celebrated their engagement.
The Marmorschlssl was once a tea house of
the Empress; today it houses a photography mu-
seum.
Many aristocrats from the days of the Austrian
monarchy and famous people such as Franz
Lhar or Oscar Strauss have their last resting
place at Bad Ischler cemetery.
St. Nikolaus is the Catholic parish church that
houses the Anton-Bruckner organ.
The Zauner pastry shop and caf was founded
in 1832 and is nearly as famous as Ischl itself.
200 different varieties of fresh confectionary are
offered daily.
The Congress Centre and Theatre in the Kur-
park combines historic ambience with state-of-
the-art technological equipment for events with
up to 1,000 people.

The Emperors Great Love
10 SMALL HISTORIC TOWNS
Trade and crafts have always played an im-
portant role in the town on the River Mur.
Various trade guilds dominated the economic
and cultural life and laid the foundation stone
of todays Bad Radkersburg. The 17 preserved
guild coffers alone bear witness to the old art of
crafts. Arcade courtyards, magnificent build-
ings, the unique museum and the medieval city
walls bestow a Mediterranean character to the
town. A place to enjoy and to relax, to unwind
and to cycle through romantic meads and
idyllic vineyards following a map or GPS.
WHAT HISTORY TELLS US
Bad Radkersburg was first mentioned in an
official document in 1182. In 1299, the important
trade centre was given town status and became
a fortress against Hungary. Its economic pros-
perity was the basis for many privileges, such
as the right of entrepot or the pre-emptive
wine selling right. In the 16
th
century, as the
Ottoman threat increased, the fortification was
strengthened by master builders from Northern
Italy. When the borders were redefined after the
collapse of the monarchy, Bad Radkersburg lost
more than 50% of its municipal area. Since 1970,
the town has been enjoying an economic upturn
thanks to its mineral and thermal springs. In
1978, Bad Radkersburg was the only Austrian
town to win the European gold medal for monu-
ment protection.
CULTURAL TREASURES TO EXPLORE
The Main Square with the Town Hall Tower
is the late Gothic landmark of the town.
St. Marys Column was built to commemorate
the plague of 1680.
The Gothic parish church with its three-nave
Gothic basilica displays tombstones inside and
outside the church.
The Herberstorff Renaissance Palais stands
out with magnificent arcades around its court-
yard, Italian architectural design and a medieval
tower linked to the fortification of the town.
Frauenplatz square, Frauentor gate and the
Frauenkirche church bear witness to Late Ba-
roque.
Capuchin minster dating back to the 14
th
cen-
tury, a reminder of the Augustinian monastery.
Murgasse with the traditional cobble stones.
Parktherme thermal spa with its hot springs
and as a speciality a 50 m sports basin for
physical exercise in pleasantly warm water. The
spa offers gentle massages, relaxing sauna ses-
sions and culinary delights.

inhabitants, Feldkirch is the second largest
town in Vorarlberg, Austrias most westerly
province. It is also Vorarlbergs oldest town
with medieval architectural character. Fasci-
natingly multi-faceted, thats what this town
is with a jester festival, with Vinobile Feld-
kirch a renowned wine fair in Western Au-
stria, and with the Feldkirch Festival.
WHAT HISTORY TELLS US
The first settlements were established in the
Bronze Age; the German name Feldkirch
was for the first time mentioned in an inven-
tory of possessions of 842: Ecclesia sancti
Petri ad Campos id est Feldkircha St. Peter
bei den Feldern church, thats Feldkirch. In
1218, Feldkirch was given town status, civitas
Veltkilch. The towns prosperity was due to
the excellent geographic position in terms of
transportation, to its role of economic centre
and the political activities of its townspeople. In
1376, the townspeople fought for their freedom
and after the battle the last Montfort count of
the Feldkirch county, Rudolf IV, granted them
their freedom.
CULTURAL TREASURES TO EXPLORE
Schattenburg fortress, landmark of the town,
graceful, nearly majestic, former fortification
of the counts of Montfort and shrouded in le-
gend. The Countess of Montfort is said to still
haunt the fortress today!
Katzenturm tower is a reminder of the for-
mer town wall. The big bell in the tower is the
fourth largest bell of Austria.
St. Nikolaus Cathedral is the most important
Gothic church of Vorarlberg; Donauschule
ironwork and paintings.
The Town Hall, built in 1493, was once used
as a grain store; the first floor served as a cloth
store. Frescoes show the history of the town.
The Siechenhaus hospital with the Magda-
lene church dates back to the start of the 14
th
century and is known for its beautiful frescoes.
Today it houses a youth hostel.
The Regional Academy of Music was origi-
nally the Stella Matutina of the Jesuits that
plays an important role in Thomas Manns
novel The Magic Mountain.
The Museum of Targets has more than 250
exhibits.
The Game Park with its nature trail is perfect
for nature lovers.

26 SMALL HISTORIC TOWNS
If you want to take a break from everyday
routine and leave all your cares behind, you
have come to the right place here in the mid-
dle of the Radstdter Tauern. On the sun ter-
race of the Enns valley, the medieval town
of Radstadt invites its guests to explore the
numerous traces of history between the old
town walls, churches, tombs and monasteries.
Historically grown culture and traditions are
as important to the people of Radstadt as the
hospitality they offer. And so it may well be
that one or the other guests finds himself in
the middle of the dumpling or guard festi-
val or can listen to classical or modern music.
WHAT HISTORY TELLS US
Rastat was first mentioned in documents in
1074. Due to its strategically important location
on the old Roman road from Aquileia over the
Radstadt Tauern to Juvavum (Salzburg), Radstadt
received town rights under Archbishop Rudolf
von Hohenegg in 1289. In the deep Middle Ages
Radstadt became a booming centre of trade.
During the time of the Peasant Wars, the town
held out under Michl Gaismair (1525/26) against
siege by 5,000 peasants, and in 1527 received
the Great Letter of Freedom from Archbishop
Matthus Lang. After numerous occupations
by Austrian, Bavarian and French troops, the
town became part of the Austrian Crown land
of Salzburg.

The former small fortified church is tucked

certs, are held each summer between June and
September in this church that offers not only
the suitable backdrop but also unique listening
experience thanks to the simple but highly
effective acoustic system, clay pots bricked

Legend has it that when a stork builds a nest
on the chimney of house, luck moves into
this house. It is hard to think of this town
of storks and fine wines without the white
birds. They are part and parcel of the pictur-
esque ensemble of carefully maintained bour-
geois town houses and colourful Baroque
and Renaissance facades. Surrounded by the
hills of Rust on the one side, by Lake Neu-
siedler See on the other side, the meaning
of time seems to have been forgotten a long
time ago in this smallest chartered town of
Austria.
WHAT HISTORY TELLS US
First mentioned in records in 1317 under
the name of Ceel the Hungarian word
for elm. First mentioned as Rust in 1385. In
1524, Queen Mary of Hungary granted the
people of Rust the right to brand a crowned
R on their barrels, which ensured the
town enormous tax advantages. The R
is still used today as a cork mark. In 1681,
the people of Rust purchased the freedom
of the town, which sealed the immediacy
of the empire. Since that time the un-
touched medieval town where the Turks
were also unable to have great effect has
been the smallest administrative district
in Austria. Rust was appointed UNESCO
World Heritage Site in 2001.
CULTURAL TREASURES TO EXPLORE
The picturesque old town has been under
the protection of the Hague Convention since
1954. Since 1975 it has been one of the three
Austrian monument protection model towns
of the Council of Europe. The other two are
Salzburg and Krems. Since 2001, Rust and
the Fert Neusiedler See region have been
UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Fishermens Church from the 12
th
to 16
th
cen-
turies; a fortified church without tower display-
ing the oldest frescoes in the Burgenland.
The Old Town Gate and Town Walls were ori-
ginally built from wood in 1512. Destroyed by
the Turks and rebuilt from stone in 1612, the
walls still completely encircle the old part of
town.
The Pulverturm tower was one part of the
town walls and served as an observation tower.
The Seehof is a group of buildings consisting
of several privately-owned Baroque houses. It
is an events and communication centre and
also seat of the Austrian Wine Academy.
Kremayrhaus houses the towns museum with
works of art, antiquities and exhibitions.

The Free Town of Rust is the setting for the ORF

simply everything: architectural gems, unique
wines which have won countless awards, a large

Salt, wood, ores, wine, silk, glass, corn, dra-

its guests. Famous painters and writers were
unable to resist the towns unique atmosphere

WHAT HISTORY TELLS US
Scardigna was first mentioned in documents
in 804; in the course of the 9
th
and 10
th
centu-
ries, Schrding became the centre of the county
of Vornbach-Neuburg. The Counts of Andech
followed in 1160 and the Bavarian Wittelsbachs
in 1248. In addition to its economic importance
as a trading town on the River Inn, there was
soon a great deal of early political activity as
well. The Bavarian dukes, above all Ludwig the
Bearded (in the 15
th
century), built Schrding
into a strong fortification. The town suffe-
red severe damage through devastating fires
(in 1724 and 1779), and French occupation
(1809). After the Napoleonic Wars in 1816, the
Innviertel region was again Austrian.

32 SMALL HISTORIC TOWNS
Traditions and a southern placidity Spittal has
long become town of cultural sophistication
and invites its guests to explore dichotomies.
A stroll through the old town reveals traces
of history everywhere. Renaissance buildings
such as Porcia Castle convey the grandiosity of
the past. Goldeck, the local mountain, and idyl-
lic Lake Millsttter See promise activities and
relaxation. And in terms of sociability, Spittal
is also unique. Superb restaurants and typical
traditional cuisine ensure culinary pleasures,
and the numerous cafs and pubs in the towns
centre are perfect places to unwind.
WHAT HISTORY TELLS US
The foundation for a blossoming town was laid
when the people of Ortenburg built a hospital
(Spittl) on one of the most important trade
routes of Roman times in the 12
th
century. In
1524, Gabriel von Salamanca acquired the coun-
ty of Ortenburg with all properties, and in 1533
had the most famous Renaissance palace north
of the Alps built, Porcia Castle. Many aristocrats
often stayed as guests or resided in Spittal, inclu-
ding the princes of Porcia who ruled and resided
in the castle bearing their name from 1662 to
1918. The castle is now owned by the municipa-
lity and used for cultural events.
CULTURAL TREASURES TO EXPLORE

rish Church was built in 1307 and is the bu-
rial place of many members of the Ortenburger
family.

34 SMALL HISTORIC TOWNS
Where the rivers Enns and Steyr meet in the
middle of the Austrian Romantic Road between
Salzburg and Vienna lies Steyr, a veritable gem
of old urban building art. Countless historic
buildings, one of the most beautiful squares in
Europe with the towns landmark in the middle
the Gothic Bummerlhaus make visitors
flock into the town. Culinary treats from the
varied Upper Austrian cuisine seduce guests
to linger, modern shops and small farmers
markets invite them to strolls. Today, Steyr is
a harmonious symbiosis of a past rich in tradi-
tion and pulsating modern lifestyle.
WHAT HISTORY TELLS US
Around 980 the Ottakar margraves in Styria
built todays Lamberg Castle. The settlement
around the castle and the parish church were
first mentioned in official documents in 985.
In 1186, the town fell into the ownership of the
Babenbergers. In 1287, Steyr was granted its
town charter and extensive trading rights by
Duke Albrecht I. An economic crisis brought
about by fires in the town and other changes
was resolved in 1864 by Josef Werndls mass
production of breech-loading rifles, which made
Steyr the armourer of Europe. The tradition of
iron processing continues today in automotive
development and production.

buildings in Austria.

36 SMALL HISTORIC TOWNS
The Upper Austrian town of Wels called
Ovilava by the Romans with its 60,000
inhabitants is the biggest community in the
group of Small Historic Towns. For more than
2000 years, Wels has known how to enjoy life.
And life pulsates here between splendid town
houses and modern purpose-built structures,
romantic courtyards with arcades, trendy pubs
and traditional restaurants. Wels is a town of
trade exhibitions, a shopping centre and is ap-
preciated beyond regional borders. Lively pe-
destrian zones, street artists, al fresco gardens,
and particularly cosy pubs and inns shape the
towns profile of a liveable and loveable town.
WHAT HISTORY TELLS US
Castrum uueles is mentioned for the first
time in official records in 776. Wels was
raised to market town in 1215 by Babenberg
Leopold VI and to the town status in 1222.
On 12 January 1519, Emperor Maximilian I
died at Wels Castle. At the end of the 16
th
century, and the beginning of the Counter
Reformation, wealthy citizens left the town;
the Peasant Wars and the Thirty Years
War caused the economic decline of Wels.
The inner part of the town was converted
to Baroque style in the 18
th
century. The
building of the horse-drawn railway and
numerous industrial endeavours took place
in the first half of the 19
th
century, and in
1964 the town was awarded the statute.
CULTURAL TREASURES TO EXPLORE

WHAT HISTORY TELLS US
First inhabited in Roman times, a settlement
under the name of Cella in Bisonica (Zelle im
Pinzgau) was established by monks of Archbishop
Johannes of Salzburg in 740. The town is one of
the oldest Bavarian settlements in the Pinzgau
region. In 1358, Zell was raised to town market
status. The people of Zell did not get involved
in the Peasants War and were therefore granted
certain privileges for pilgrimages to Salzburg.
When the railway was built in 1875, the first
tourists arrived. Emperor Franz Joseph I and
Empress Elisabeth visited Zell am See in 1855,
and in 1900 the famous Trapp family spent a
summer in Thumersbach. In 1928, Zell am See
is raised to town status. Today, it is a modern,

Experience the many varied cultural traditions
and hospitality of Austrias Small Historic Towns
and celebrate a festival devoted to the joy of life.
Entrance is free!
This is a festival of culinary pleasures and unforgotten traditions full of
zest for life, to which the Small Historic Towns warmly invite visitors in
a different town every year. This year Gmunden at Lake Traunsee has the
honour of hosting this festival of cultural diversity. Here the many diffe-
rent traditions of the 17 historic small towns come together to inspire and
impress visitors with their sheer number and variety.
The southerly charm of Gmunden seems to have been created especially
for this convergence, where long forgotten traditions merge with the pres-
ent day. For a short while, the town at the lake source of the River Traun
is plunged into a colourful buzz of cultural events. The little alleyways,
streets and squares of Gmunden are filled with music of widely varying
styles, and artistic performances enchant young and old. Gmunden
invites you to a festival celebrating culture and the joy of life, and looks
forward to your visit!

ELCOM
E TO ADVENT
in the Small Historic Towns.
Christmas the way it used to be. The scent of
gingerbread, the shining eyes of children, flicke-
ring candles, the glow of lanterns and the sound
of Advent songs. Advent in the Small Historic
Towns reawakens memories of childhood and
lets peace and happiness permeate everyday life.
Medieval town centres, historic squares and
narrow winding streets are plunged into a sea
of lights and make many a heart beat faster in
pleasant anticipation of Father Christmas!

HALL in Tirol
Lights of anticipation
The Advent illuminations of stars and Christ-
mas symbols plunge the narrow little streets
and the townhouses of Hall into the light of
anticipation of the most peaceful time of year.
The Advent market, brass bands, choirs and
much more besides are what make the time
before Christmas so very special here.
BADEN bei Wien
Its Christmas!
At Advent in particular this classy spa
town welcomes guests with its special
atmosphere. So the Casino and the town
together invite visitors to the traditional
Advent opening or the crazy Perchten-
lauf evil spirits parade.
BAD ISCHL
A very special time
Thats what Christmas is always like in
the Emperors town. The crib display, the
craft market, traditional-style Christ-
mas or Christmas at the Museum and
its not only in Advent that Bad Ischl is
well worth visiting.
BAD RADKERSBURG
Truly heavenly enjoyment!
Baked apples, scented mulled wine,
scrambled eggs with pumpkin seed oil,
Gibancen cake the Styrian delicacies
make Advent here a time of heavenly en-
joyment.
IMST
Where peace and happiness reign
Here you will find the loveliest Christ-
mas cribs in the Alpine region. The Imst
crib trail presents the most beautiful dis-
plays by local crib builders on selected
squares, house entrances and windows.
JUDENBURG
Christmas canopy
Its a well-known fact that at Christmas
time the stars shine especially brightly. You
can view them in extra detail in the most
modern planetarium in Europe, at the
top of the town tower, Judenburgs stone
guardian. And visitors should be sure not
to miss the romantic Christkindl market.
KUFSTEIN
When Christmas time comes
At the Josefsburg Castle in the Kufstein
Fortress it really gets Christmassy when
darkness falls over the town. Advent and
Christmas melodies ring out from the
walls, and the scents of punch, mulled wine
and freshly baked bread on a stick rise from
the Christmas market in the town park.
Of cherubs and heavenly beings
Every year in Advent the town centre of
Feldkirch is transformed into a magical
Christmas world, with arts and crafts,
decorations, toys and gift ideas. Defi-
nitely not to be missed is the largest Ad-
vent calendar in Vorarlberg.

Snow-covered mountains, the crisply cold,

their spell over everyone during Advent.
