First Write… It Helps!

You have an important test tomorrow. You study very hard. You
understand the information. You’re doing well in the class. But you’re
still (1). You need to relax. What can help? Maybe a
quiet walk? A cup of tea? A little yoga? Psychologists have another
idea: Sit down and write! Write about your stress.

Why does writing help? There are two reasons. First, stress uses space
in the brain. So, there is less room for memory. Writing moves the stress out of brain.
It puts it on paper. Then there is more space for memory.

Your memory works like the memory in a computer. You need to delete some files to
make space for other files. Students need to (2) a lot of information.
So they need a lot of space in their brains for memory. They need to delete their “files”
of stress.

8
The second reason is writing helps you to focus. Sometimes, people can think only
about their stress. Writing can help (3). How? People write about
their stress. So they feel less worried. They can focus better on other things.

Psychologists are studying the link between stress and writing. They do
(4) with students. They put students into two groups. One group of
students writes about their stress for ten minutes. The other group sits
(5). Then all the students take a test. What are the results? The
students in the writing group do better than the other group of students. In fact, their
marks are better and higher!

Do you (6) about tests? Try this way: Go to class 10 minutes

Then take the test. Maybe the psychologists are right. Maybe writing will help you, too.
