2024
1A. Look at the photos in the article and discuss the questions.
1. Have you ever been surfing? Would you like to? Why/Why not?
No, I have never been surfing and I do not think I would like to try. Personally, I
am not the most skilled when it comes to sports or physical activities so I would
rather avoid an accident. Also, I am not a particularly good swimmer so if I fell off
the board I would be in big trouble.
2. What do you think is special about the lady in the photo? What do you think
happened to her surfboard?
She is special because she can perform as a high-performance athlete despite her
physical disability. The surfboard is damaged because she was in an accident where
her left arm and a huge chuck of the surfboard were bitter off by a tiger shark.
1B. Read the Article and check your answers.

traumatic experience. She has been really brave and continue to compete even
though now it can be harder to do so with just one arm.
2. When did she start to surf competitively?
She started to surf competitively when she was 8 years old.
3. What happened when Bethany was Thirteen?
She was attacked by a tiger shark and lost her left arm in the incident.
4. What were the surfing conditions like before her accident?
According to Bethany, the waves were small and the water in general was very
calm.
5. What did Bethany do when she realised the shark had bitter her?
She remained calm and tried to paddle back towards the shore.
6. How did she survive the shark attack?
She survived thanks to the help of her friends and the immediate medical
treatment she received.

Yes, she is now one of the Top 50 surfers in the world and has won many
competitions.

I think she was really brave. I do not think I could go back to surfing if I were
in her position. I would be scared to come back in the water.
2. How do you think Bethany helps to encourage others to follow their dreams?
She is an inspiration to others. She came back from her accident with a strong
mindset and followed her dreams despite her experience.
3. Do you have a particular dream or ambition you would like to achieve? What
