QUESTION 1:
a. The density of brass is 8.4 gcm-3. What does this statement mean? Express the given in SI units. [2]

d. Define the term density. The density of water at room temperature at 998 kgm . A cylindrical tank of
radius 10m and height 7m is filled fully with water. If the tank is made of steel, find [1+3]
i. The mass of water present in the tank.
ii. The mass of the steel tank, when it is empty. [The density of steel is 550kgm-3].

b. Differentiate between periodic and non periodic motion by giving example of each. [2]

d. Consider a body which is motion. In a certain time instance ‘t’ (from t1 to t2 ; where t = t1-t2), it is
observed that a body has an initial velocity of ‘u’, it accelerates at ‘a’, and reaches a final velocity of
‘v’. During that time instance it moves a distance ‘S’. Draw a velocity – time graph representing the
above stated motion, and show that v2 – u2 = 2aS. [4]

a. State the factors on which the time period of a pendulum depends on, and state the working formula
for the same. State the length of the string required to set up the pendulum, in a second’s pendulum, if

b. Define pitch and Least count of a screw. State how they are related to each other. [2+1]
c. State the functions of the following: [2]
i. Sleeve and thimble in screw.
ii. Inner jaws in Vernier scale.

d. State and explain the types of errors in a screw gauge. [2]

a. Draw the following graphs: [2]
i. Distance – time graph for a body in rest
ii. Acceleration – time graph for a body travelling with uniform velocity
b. The figure below shows the velocity – time graph for a particle. [5]
i. State the nature of the particle.
ii. The displacement of the particle at t = 2s.
iii. Does the particle change its direction of motion?
iv. Compare the distance travelled by the particle from 0 to 4s and from 4s to 6s.
v. Find the acceleration from 0 to 4s and from 4s to 6s.
c. The given figure below shows the displacement of a body at different times. [3]
i. Calculate the velocity of the body as it moves for the time intervals 0 to 5s, 5s to 7s, and 7s to
9s respectively.
ii. Calculate the average velocity during the time interval 5s to 9s.
QUESTION 7:
a. Compare the time periods of the pendulum on Earth and on Mars. (g on Earth = 9.8ms-2 and g on Mars =
4.36ms-2) [1]

b. Compare the lengths of two pendulums at the same place having time periods 2m and 8m respectively.

c. A screw gauge has 50 divisions on its circular scale and its screw moves by 1 mm on turning 2
rotations. When the flat end of the screw is in contact with the stud, the zero of the circular scale lies
below the base line and the 9th division of the circular scale is in line with the base line. On measuring
the diameter of a wire, the reading is as found below. Find: [4]
i. The pitch of the screw.
ii. The Least count of the screw.
iii. The observed diameter of the wire.
iv. The corrected radius of the wire.
d. In a vernier callipers there are 19 divisions on main scale which are equal to 20 divisions on the main
scale, and the main scale is calibrated in mm. In measuring the diameter of a metal bob the main scale
reads 35 divisions and 4th divisions on the vernier scale coincides with a main scale division. Find the:

i. Least count
ii. The correct reading of the radius if the zero error is -0.02cm.
e. A train starts from rest and accelerates uniformly at a rate of 2ms-2 for 10s. It then maintains a constant
speed for 200s. The brakes are then applied and the train is uniformly retarded and comes to rest and
comes to rest in next 50s. Find: [3]
i. The maximum velocity reached.
ii. The retardation is the last 50s.
iii. The total distance travelled.
