Paragraph 3
Students should tell a story using narrative tenses and the past perfect to illustrate their points so far. Points for
using phrasal verbs like hang out, reminds me of, etc.
Paragraph 4

Model answer
These days, most teenagers have a smartphone so they spend a lot of free time on that. They use it for chatting with
their friends, playing games, watching videos and listening to music.
Smartphones weren't really around for my parents, so their free time was different. For example, my mother used to
hang out with friends more. Her friends would bring over magazines and they used to read and listen to music.
I have story which shows the differences between then and now. I was watching a documentary with my parents and
using my phone at the same time. My father said I was addicted to my phone. But I had been hanging out online with
my friends, finding out facts about the documentary, and playing a game of chess with a cousin! When I showed him,
he was impressed!
In summary, I think smartphones have changed our free time forever. Teenagers now can do all the things their
parents did in the past, but now they can do many of these things at the same time.

Should people colour (colourize) old black and white photos?
There is currently a popular trend to colourize old black and white photos. Some people say that the process helps
us connect to the past, that we get a better understanding of our ancestors’ world and can appreciate how
similar they are to us today. However, I don’t agree with this because I think that it gives us a false idea of the
past.
To begin with, it is not possible to know exactly what the original colours of the subject were. In a photograph of a
woman wearing a dress in the 19th century, we can't know for sure if the dress was blue, green or grey.
Secondly, creating a photograph is a lot of work for any photographer. They spend time thinking about light and
shadow – it’s a work of art. If someone changes that, 200 years later, it's like saying that they can do a better job
than the original photographer.
In conclusion, I believe that old black and white photos should not be colourized because this creates images of the
past that may not be accurate and it also changes the work of the original artist without their permission.

The main character is Christopher McCandless, a university graduate who decides to travel into the wilderness
alone. He is played by Emile Hirsch.
The story begins with McCandless graduating from university. Then we follow him across the USA. He meets some
interesting and nice people along the way, and has some exciting adventures. But then he decides to try and live
in the Alaskan wilderness. He finds an old bus there and lives in it during the winter. I won't spoil the ending.
In my view, Hirsch is fantastic and the supporting actors are very believable, too. The film can be quite sad at times
so it can be difficult to watch. However, despite the sadness, there are some happy and uplifting moments, too.
I really recommend this film even if you aren't a fan of biographical films. The story is extremely enjoyable but be
prepared to have a box of tissues with you!

Flooding in Madely
I'm here in town of Madely, in North Yorkshire, where there has been major flooding. Madely is one of the worst hit
towns in the area and there are estimates that over 2,000 homes have been affected. More than 10,000 homes
are without power.
Behind me, you can see the effects of the flooding. The entire town centre is under water and has been for more
than 12 hours.
This morning, I spoke to local resident, Gina Largo. She told me that she and her family had to leave their home last
night after police alerted them to the danger, following 3 days of heavy rain. The first floor of their 4-bedroom
house is now under water. They are presently staying with friends. It's the same story for thousands of local
residents.
This isn't the first time that North Yorkshire has been hit by disastrous floods. Just 2 years ago there was a similar
situation. Five years before that, over 1,000 homes were flooded after a rain storm dumped a year's worth of
water on the district.
The government says that help is on its way. The army has been called out to help with rescuing residents still
trapped in their homes. And a spokesman says that money has been put aside to cover much of the damage
caused by the flooding.

towns in the area and there are estimates that over 2,000 homes have been affected.

A weekend away
I went to stay in a treehouse with my family a few weekends ago. It was up in the mountains near Malaga and we had
a fantastic time.
We were really looking forward to staying in a treehouse and we weren't disappointed. It was great! The rooms were
all around the tree. There were two bedrooms and one living room with a small kitchen. Me, my sister and Helen
were really excited. But the best thing was that there was a pool too. Not in the tree of course! The most memorable
part for me was going to sleep up in a tree!
The next day we spent relaxing around the pool. The view was amazing. You could see the Mediterranean while
splashing about in the pool. Then dad cooked food in the barbecue. We listened to music and danced. It was so much
fun. I'd recommend the treehouse to anyone. The only negative thing was that it was cool in the evenings so take a
jumper!

Teenagers should be restricted to a maximum of two hours a week video gaming a week.
Do you agree or disagree?
Some people say that young adults should only be allowed to play video games for a couple of hours a week. I
strongly disagree with this view.
Video gaming is a very wide category. Many games are created to help students learn skills that contribute to their
education. For example, I often play games on my phone that help me with learning English. Nobody could argue that
teenagers should be prevented from playing these types of games. Furthermore, many games which don't seem to be
educational still teach vital skills such as hand-to-eye coordination.
Why should we make a general ban on something which is not a problem? I can understand parents taking action
when their children are doing something which is harmful. For example, if a student's education is being harmed due
to playing games for too long, then that needs to be resolved. However, not all teenagers play excessively. Punishing
everyone for something which only a minority of students do is not fair.
People who promote the idea of restricting playing time say that computer games are addictive. However, no study
has ever found this to be the case. It's like saying that doing something fun is addictive. There is a difference between
wanting to do something because it is fun, and it doing it because it's addictive and you can’t stop.
In conclusion, there should be no restriction on gaming because it punishes everyone because of a minority.
Furthermore, it prevents people from developing certain skills.
