ART OR A-ART?

Kensaiah Axel F. Lapesora

A.I. has emerged as one of the most fascinating creations of the human mind.

A robot with a virtual mind adapts daily to human thinking, enhancing its

understanding of human behavior. Yet, as always, we humans tend to abuse what is

given to us. We use AI to generate essays for schoolwork, solve complex problems,

and, in some cases, engage in malicious activities, such as creating prompts for

pornography or seeking personal gain in competitions—most notably, art

competitions. Are we really willing to go that far?

There was a post from September 9, 2024, a contest was organized by the

Philippine Rural Electric Cooperatives Association Inc. (PHILRECA), an umbrella

organization of various local electric cooperatives in the country. A digital poster-

making competition titled “Disenyo Ng Liwanag At Pag-Asa.”.

One contestant won that contest with her work looking a bit familiar, like one

of those bot-chatting ads from YouTube. It was obvious, that an A.I. generated work

that won, mind you, that machine created a piece worthy of winning first prize. From

the very beginning of the contest, it was stated in the mechanics of the contest that

“all entries must be the original work of the participants and must not infringe on any

third party’s existing copyrights.” Part of the criteria assesses the “visual impact or

creativity” of the work, meaning the entry should “show original design and are

uniquely customized and not imitated.” It takes up 30% of the total score.

The piece that was generated or created was not even at that level in terms

of “visual impact” or “creativity of the work.” Not a single element of art was

emphasized in that work. Not to be biased, call me a hypocrite, or anything, but

what I am trying to point out is that art is not all about the line you draw; Art is about

the meaning, emotion, and expression you pour into that piece.
I always think that the human mind is incomprehensible when it comes to our

imagination. Expressing it through ink, paint, or granite. Drawing of an unlimited,

unfathomable, and expressive mind. Honing our skills from start to finish. We’ve been

like this: what interests us, inspires us, and turns that inspiration into expression, putting

that expression on a blank canvas.

But now with the rise of AI. Technology where you can easily prompt up,

“Generate me a drawing of this dragon battling the knight.” It can easily generate

that. Isn’t that unfair to those who worked hard for their craft? So ask yourselves:

What makes art, art? Isn’t this the fact that we put the effort, blood sweat, and tears

in our canvas—the brushstrokes and emotions that this masterpiece gives? But now

why is there competition for A.I.? AI-generated photos— where there is no emotion

or passion, just a picture of a lifeless image? That is no “art”, because Art is about the

expression of our emotions. Art is what makes us unique.
