Master in Civil Engineering-
COURSE: YEAR/REGIME: 1º/PL DATE 17/02/2023
Building Construction

TYPE: 3nd EXAMINATION PERIOD

ACADEMIC YEAR: 2022/2023 SEMESTER: 1º X 2º DURATION 02H30m

CONSULTATION: Only Eurocode 8

1st Question – 6,0 marks

1. (1.0 mark) What does the response spectrum of a structural system represent? How is it
obtained?
2. (5.0 marks) Calculate the maximum force in the system with one degree of freedom given in
the figure 1 subjected to the load indicated in figure 2.
Data: E=30 GPa; Floor weight: 100000 kN; Column dimensions: 0,25 x 0,30 m2

2nd Question – 15,0 marks

A Reinforced Concrete residential building, with two stories, will be constructed in Faro. The
building has a frame system with frames in two orthogonal directions as illustrated in the next
figure.

Data:
Seismic Type 1 (agr=2,0m/s2); soil Type B; Importance Class II (importance factor I=1,0)
Columns: section 0,30x0,30m2; height 3,00m
Consider flexural stiffness of the beams =
Concrete class C30/37; Ec=33GPa
Actions on floors:
Floor 1 G1=8,0 kN/m2 Q1=2,0 kN/m2 2=0,3
Floor 2 G2=7,0 kN/m 2
Q2=0,4 kN/m 2
2=0

Considering only Y direction and seismic Type 1 calculate:

a) (5.0 marks) The natural frequency in Y direction by Rayleigh Method.
b) (4.0 marks) Using the Lateral Force Method calculate the horizontal forces acting in each
storey without considering the torsional effects. Consider a behaviour factor equal to 1.5.
si  mi Fi is the horizontal force acting on storey i;
Fi  Fb 
 sj  mj Fb is the seismic base shear;
si, sj displacements of masses mi, mj in the fundamental mode
shape;
Fb  Sd (T1 )  m  
mi, mj are the storey masses.
c) (3.0 marks) The moment at the base of column P1B, without considering the torsional effects.

d) (2.0 marks) Considering the requirements of Eurocode 8 for the design structures with
medium ductility class, the transverse reinforcements of a beam are designed to a design
value of the shear force obtained by the capacity method. Explain how the design value of the
shear force can be obtained taking into account the quasi-permanent actions and seismic
action.
