When building up numbers using the Roman numerals the following rules are followed:
Rule 1
When the symbol is repeated the value is also repeated except for V.

Rule 2
A numeral should not be repeated more than three times. For example III is correct while IIII is
not.

Rule 3
When I is to the right of either V or X it shows that the number is one more than V or X.

Rule 4
When I is to the left of either V or X it shows that the number is one less than V or X.

Solve the following:
1 A farmer harvested 4,000kg of maize and sold 3,000kg. What percentage of maize
did she sell?
Answer
Total maize = maize sold + maize left
= 3000kg + 1000kg
= 4000kg
maize sold
∴ Percentage of maize sold = total maize x 100%

= 4000 x 100%

= 4 x 100%

= 3 x 25
= 75%

2 Ndola village has 560 adults and 2,240 children. Find the percentage of children in
Ndola.
Answer
Total population = adults + children
= 560 + 2,240
= 2800

= 6 x 45

Number of remaining bales = 450 – 270
