QUESTION 1
(a) Briefly describe ‘polynomial interpolation’ and its limitation. Suggest a method to
overcome the limitation in polynomial interpolation. Sketch a diagram to illustrate
how the suggested method performs better than polynomial interpolation.

(b) The following data in Table 1 were gathered to show the growth in population (p)
of a small community over a twenty-year period. As an engineer working for a utility
company, you must forecast the population into the future in order to anticipate the
demand for power.
Table 1: Data of population (p) for a small community over years (t)
Time, t (years) 0 5 10 15 20
Population, p 50 110 230 470 1010
i) Employ the exponential model (𝒑𝒑 = 𝜶𝜶𝒆𝒆𝜷𝜷𝜷𝜷 ) to fit a linear regression with the data.
ii) Determine the value of the coefficients of α and β.
iii) From the linear regression model, estimate the population after 25 years.
QUESTION 2
(b) Fully developed flow moving through a 40 cm diameter pipe has the following
velocity profile:
𝑅𝑅
Find the volume flow rate Q using the relationship 𝑄𝑄 = ∫0 2𝜋𝜋𝜋𝜋𝜋𝜋 𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑 where r is the
radial axis of the pipe, R is the radius of the pipe, and v is the velocity. Solve the
problem using the following approaches:
QUESTION 3
(a) Illustrate or sketch the projected value of velocity (v) when 𝑡𝑡 = 5 using both Euler’s
and Midpoint Methods on the curve in Figure 1. Use initial value, v(0) and step size
of 5 seconds.

(b) If water is drained from a vertical cylindrical tank by opening a valve at the base,
the water will flow fast when the tank is full and slow down as it continues to drain.
As it turns out, the rate at which the water level drops is:
𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑
= −𝑘𝑘𝑦𝑦
𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑
where k is a constant depending on the shape of the hole and the cross-sectional
area of the tank and drain hole. The depth of the water y is measured in meters
and the time t in minutes. If k = 0.06, determine how long does it take for the water
level to be less than 1 m, if the fluid level is initially 3 m. Solve by applying Euler’s
equation. Use step size of 5 minutes.
