Centrifugal pumps

1- A centrifugal pump has external and internal impeller diameters as


600mm and 300mm respectively. The vane angle at inlet and outlet
are and respectively. If the water enters the impeller at 2.5m/s
find (a) speed of the impeller in r.p.m., (b) work done by the pump.

2- A centrifugal pump has external and internal diameters of 300mm and


150mm respectively. The vane angles of inlet and outlet are and
and the pump runs at 1450 r.p.m. If the velocity of flow through the

3- A centrifugal pump having external and internal diameters as 750mm


and 400mm respectively is operating at 1000 r.p.m. The vanes are

constant at 6m/s, find vane angle at inlet and work done by the pump.

4- Calculate the vane angle at inlet of a centrifugal pump impeller has 300

7- A centrifugal pump delivers 0.3 water at 1400 rpm. The total

suction and delivery pipes have the same bore.
Calculate the following vane angles: (a) For the impeller vanes at exit.
(b) For entry to the stationary guide vanes surrounding the impeller.

tip speed of 10 m/s and flow velocity of 1.6 m/s. The outlet blade angle

10- The impeller of a centrifugal pump is 325 mm diameter and 19 mm


width at outlet. The blade angle at outlet is , wheel speed 1600 rpm,
suction lift 1.5m, and estimated loss of head on the suction side 2.1m.
The static lift from the pump center is 39m and the delivery pipe losses
9.6m. If the manometric efficiency of the pump is 76% and the overall
efficiency 68% find the discharge in and the power needed. If

11- A centrifugal pump impeller has an external diameter of 300 mm and
discharge area of 0.11 . The blades are bent backwards so that the
direction of the relative velocity at the discharge surface makes an

are 300mm and 225 mm respectively. Gauges at points on the suction
and delivery pipes close to the pump and each 1.5m above the level in

at 1200 rpm. It required 71 kw to drive the pump.
Find (a) the overall efficiency (b) the manometric or hydraulic efficiency,
assuming that water enters the impeller without shock or whirl (c) the

12- A centrifugal pump impeller has diameter of 60 cm and width of 6 cm
at outlet. The pump runs at 1450 rpm and delivery 0.8 against a
head of 80m. The leakage loss after the impeller is 4% of discharge, the
external mechanical loss is 10kw and the hydraulic efficiency is 80%.
Determine the blade angle at outlet, the power required and the overall
efficiency of the pump. [Answer , 794kw, 79%]
13- A centrifugal pump has to discharge 225 of water and develop
a head of 22.5m when the impeller rotates at 1500 rpm.
Determine (a) the impeller diameter and (b) the blade angle at outlet
edge of the impeller. Assume that the manometric efficiency is 75%,
the loss of head in the pump due to fluid resistance is 0.033 m,
where C m/s is the absolute velocity with which the water is
discharged from the impeller, the area of the impeller outlet surface is
1.2 where D is the impeller diameter in m, and the water enters
the impeller without whirl. [Answer 0.253m, ]

14- The impeller of a centrifugal pump rotates at 1450 rpm and is 25 cm


diameter and 2 cm width at outlet. There are 8 blades swept
backwards and inclined at to the tangent at outlet. The volumetric
flow rates of water through the impeller is 28 lit/sec. Neglect shock
losses and whirl at inlet, determine the head developed by the pump.
