Verbs are like the action words in a sentence.

They tell us what's happening,

what someone or something is doing, or what it's like.
Imagine you're playing a game of tag!

 Run! - The word "run" tells you to move your feet and run fast.
 Jump! - The word "jump" tells you to move your legs up and down.
 Hide! - The word "hide" tells you to find a place to be unseen.

These words, "run," "jump," and "hide," are all verbs because they tell us what to
do. They're the action words of the game!

Now, let's think about a different kind of verb.

 The cat is sleeping. - The word "is" tells us what the cat is doing. It's not
moving, it's being asleep.
 The sun is shining. - The word "is" tells us what the sun is doing. It's
giving off light and warmth.

Verbs can be action words like "run" and "jump," or they can describe what
something is or how it feels like "is" in our examples.
Can you give me another example of a verb?
Verbs are very important because they help us understand what's happening in a
sentence. They add life and movement to our stories!
