Unit 2 Outline: Motion with a Constant Acceleration

Video Questions: (Answer the following questions while watching the videos at
aplusphysics.com on Kinematic equations and Freefall).

Kinematic Equations Video

1) Do the kinematic equations apply to motion with a constant velocity, constant

acceleration or both?
2) List the five kinematic variables, define each and state what units are used to measure
each. Are these quantities instantaneous or average values?
3) Write the three kinematic equations according to the video. For each equation state
what kinematic variable is missing. List the 5 problem solving steps according to the
video.
4) Show the above steps applied to the horizontal and vertical motion sample problems.
5) Derive the fourth kinematic equation by solving the vf=v0+at equation for acceleration
and then plugging it into the x=vot +1/2 at2 equation and solving for displacement. It is
usually quicker to use this equation to solve kinematic problems with no acceleration
given.

Extra Credit: There is a fifth kinematic equation that has no initial velocity in it. Use the
other kinematic equations to derive it.

Freefall Video

6) When is an object considered to be in freefall? Are we considering air resistance in our

current calculations? What is the numerical value for the acceleration of gravity near
the surface of the Earth? How is this related to the gravitational field strength of the
Earth? How does the gravitational field strength vary with the distance the object is
from the center of the Earth?
7) Compare the directions of the acceleration and instantaneous velocity for an object
starting at rest and then undergoing freefall. How far will an object starting at rest fall
after 8 seconds?
8) Compare the directions of the initial velocity and acceleration for an object thrown
upward. What are the acceleration and instantaneous velocity at the top for the object
thrown upward? Describe the symmetry of the object’s motion.
9) A basketball player jumps up such that she is in the air for one second. What maximum
height did she reach?
10) What is the maximum height of a 0.25 kg baseball thrown upward with a speed of 20
m/s?
