(2marks)
Phileas Fogg, the main character in *Around the World in Eighty Days*, is known for
his calm, precise, and disciplined nature. At the beginning, he lives a very routine life
in London, always following a strict schedule. However, when he accepts a bet to
travel around the world in 80 days, his determination and resourcefulness are tested.
Fogg's strongest quality is his determination. Throughout the journey, he faces many
challenges like train delays, ship problems, and even being chased by a detective,
Fix, who wrongly believes Fogg is a thief. Despite these obstacles, Fogg never loses
his cool. For example, when a train breaks down, he quickly finds another way to
continue, even buying an elephant to cross India. This shows how smart and
focused he is on completing his mission.
Though he seems emotionless at first, Fogg reveals a caring side. He saves Aouda,
an Indian woman, from a dangerous ritual, delaying his journey to protect her. This
shows that Fogg values human life over his own goals. He is also patient with his
servant, Passepartout, even when he makes mistakes.
By the end, Fogg grows emotionally. He falls in love with Aouda and marries her,
showing he’s not just focused on the bet, but also capable of love and kindness.

The climax of *Around the World in Eighty Days* is the most exciting and surprising
part of the story. Phileas Fogg, along with Aouda and Passepartout, has been racing
around the world to win a bet. When they arrive in Liverpool, Fogg is wrongly
arrested for a bank robbery, causing them to lose precious time. Fogg believes he
has missed the deadline and lost the bet, leaving him very depressed. He locks
himself in his room, and everyone feels hopeless.

Just when it seems all is lost, Passepartout makes an important discovery. While
trying to arrange Fogg and Aouda’s wedding, he finds out it is actually Sunday, not
Monday, as they thought. Because they traveled eastward and crossed time zones,
they gained a day. This means Fogg still has time to win the bet!

Passepartout rushes back to tell Fogg, and they race to the Reform Club. Fogg
arrives just in time, winning the bet with only minutes to spare. While he regains his
fortune, the real victory is finding love with Aouda. This surprising turn of events
makes the climax both thrilling and emotionally satisfying. Fogg not only wins the bet
but also discovers what truly matters in life.
