Lab 1
Lab Objectives:

 To become familiar with the Windows OS environment and basic command line Interface through MS
DOS
 To become familiar with the hardware of your computer

Preamble Window Environment:

Windows is the most common operating system used for PCs. It is essential that you familiarize yourself with
the basic functionality of this OS. It is necessary that you are aware of the hardware in your computer. While
the operating system usually takes care of the complexity of managing the hardware of your computer
system, knowing the hardware helps when you have to:

 Install an operating system


 Upgrade your computer system
 Diagnose and repair problems in your computer system

Lab Task
1. For system you are using in lab you need to identify the following versions and components
from its specification.

 What is the system’s description?


 What is the system’s full name?
 What is current resolution, model of graphics card and driver version?

2. Search Device Manager in your window search area, note all information about hardware devices here
and answer the following questions?

(Hint: you can right-click on any device and see further properties)
 What is the name of the disk drive?
 Does the computer have a Bluetooth?
 Does the computer have a network adapter?
 What is the name of the monitor? Is the proper driver of the monitor installed? What is the name of
the provider of the driver for the monitor?
 What is the name and version of the keyboard? Is the proper driver of the keyboard installed? What
is the name of the provider of the driver for the keyboard?
 What is the name and version of the mouse? Is the proper driver of the mouse installed? What is the
name of the provider of the driver for the mouse?

3. Give the keyboard shortcuts for the following.

 Help
 Open start menus
 Switch between open programs
 Quit Program
 Delete item permanently
 Lock the computer
 Open windows task manager
 Delete item immediately without placing it in recycle bin
 Find files or folders
 Minimize all open windows and display the desktop
 Cycle through taskbar button
 Open windows explorer
 Close current window
 Open search
 Move to next control in dialog box
 Move the cursor to address bar in internet explorer

Lab Task
Practice the above given commands in command prompt and also search for the commands for
following operations

1) Show version of windows


2) Show time
3) Show Volume
4) Change from one drive to another
