Steve Fossett was a great adventurer. On
3 July 2002, he became the first person to fly
alone around the world in a balloon without
stopping. The balloon was called the Spirit
of Freedom. He was also famous for world swimmer
records in sailing and as a plane pilot.

He started and finished his balloon trip in
Queensland, Australia. It took him 13 days
and eight hours. He flew a total distance of
33,190 kilometres. He only slept for four hours
a day, in short 45-minute periods. 1

Steve’s interest in adventure started when he
was a child. He wasn’t good at team sports,
but he was a good climber. At the age of 12,
he climbed his first mountain. In his life, he
climbed many high mountains, but not Everest.

England in 22 hours. And he sailed and flew
planes around the world many times.
