A Dream is Merely a Sad Reality

A poem written by Langston Hughes is entitled “Dreams”. This poem was written to

emphasize the importance of having a goal in someone’s life. That life, without a single dream,

is meaningless. It encourages everyone to never let go of that “hope”. Moreover, dreams are

simply a reminder of the sad reality that we are in. The part of life that needed no fantasy to

exist.

The poem highlights the importance of having dreams in our lives. Because it plays a big

role in terms of our life’s purpose and vitality. Letting our dreams die means that we lost the will

to fight and continue living. Furthermore, not holding on to our dreams will be the end of our

constant pace of moving forward, and we will be stopped. No longer wanting to move nor keep

our pace to be able to achieve our greatest goal. Although dreams are harsh, it is undoubtedly

good lessons. So, fulfilling it will be worth it.

The impact of the poem has heightened because of the hidden meaning behind the

figurative language used. The metaphor, repetition, and imagery used in the lines “Life is a

broken-winged bird” and “Life is a barren field” defines the intensity and differences between

the two lines. The language used is simple and quite melodic, making it easy to understand. This

poem will be relevant to people who have dreams or are currently finding their goals in life. The

clarity and artistry of the poem are also substantial for the poem to be interesting.

Life is never easy. So, striving to achieve our goals will help us improve our life quality.

This poem is recommendable, it opens our eyes to a probable reality. And dreams really are a

reminder of the sad yet thrilling reality.
