INFINITE LIMITS
We say that the rational function,
N(x)
f(x) =
D(x)
is not defined if for any number a, D(a) = 0 and N(a) ≠ 0. In such cases we write the limit of this
function as:
Lim f(x) = +∞ Increases without bound
x→ ±a
1
Lim+ = +∞
x→ 0 𝑥𝑛
Theorem 3 If n is a POSITIVE integer, then
1 −∞ if n is 𝐎𝐃𝐃
Lim ={
x→ 0− xn +∞ if n is 𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐍
EXAMPLES
Evaluate the limit of the following:
Problem 1
1
Lim+
x→ 5 (x − 5)3
Problem 2
10
Lim−
x→ 3 (x − 3)4
Problem 3
8
Lim−
x→ 1 (x − 1)5
Problem 4
3
Lim+ 7
x→ 0 x
1
= Lim+ 3 ∗ Rewrite the given function
x→ 0 x7
1
= Lim+ 3 ∗ Lim+ Apply Product Rule and Power Rule of Limit laws
x→ 0 x→ 0 x7
Since n = 7 (odd integer), then apply Theorem 3
= (3)(+∞) 1
Lim+ n = +∞
x→ 0 x
= +∞ Final Answer
