Should managers monitor employee email and Internet usage? Why or


why not?

- Yes. Managers monitor employee email and Internet usage have


several reasons. Manager worry about the loss of time and
employee productivity when employees focus on personal rather
than company business. This is because too much time on personal
business translates into a loss revenue. Besides that, if personal
traffic on company traffic on company networks is too high, it will
also clog the company’s network so that legitimate business work
cannot be performance. For example, found that employees were
downloading a great deal of music and streaming video and storing
them on company servers. In addition, employees will use email or
the web at employer facilities or with employer equipment, anything
they do, including anything illegal, carries the company name.
Companies also fear the leakage of confidential information and
trade secrets through email or social networks.

Describe an effective email and web use policy for a company.

- The policy for a company to use email and the web effectively so
that the employees will understand it. Every company has different
policy for using email and policy. For example, some companies try
to ban all personal activities on corporate networks which is zero
tolerance. Some companies is blocking employee access to specific
websites or social sites. The policies should include explicit ground
rules that state, by position or level, under what circumstances
employees can use company facilities for email, blogging, or web
surfing. The policies should also inform employees whether these
activities are monitored and explain why. Internet use policies
should be customized to the unique requirements of businesses and
the cultures of their organizations.

Should managers inform employees that their web behavior is being


monitored? Or should managers monitor secretly? Why or why not?
- Managers should inform employees that their web behavior is being
monitored. This is because if not inform employees will make they
feel uncomfortable or untrusted which they may leakage of
confidential information. It also will lead to internal trust or
unethical. Besides that, many consultants believe companies should
write corporate policies on employees' email, social media, and
Internet use. The policies should include explicit ground rules that
state, by position or level, under what circumstances employees can
use company facilities for email, blogging, or web surfing. It will
ensure that company’s data will become safe.
