I What is new?

Aspiring entrepreneur need to explore the economic, cultural, and

social conditions prevailing in an area. Needs and wants of the people in a
certain area that are not met may be considered business opportunities.
Identifying the needs of the community, its resources, available raw materials,
skills, and appropriate technology can help a new entrepreneur seize business
opportunities.
To be successful in any kind of business venture, potential
entrepreneurs should look closely at the environment and market. They
should always be watchful of existing opportunities and constraints, and to
take calculated risks. The opportunities in the business environment are
factors that provide possibilities for a business to expand and make more
profit. Constraints, on the other hand, are factors that limit business growth,
hence reduce the chance of generating profit. One of the best ways to evaluate
opportunities and constraints is to conduct a Strengths, Weaknesses,
Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) Analysis.
SWOT Analysis is a managerial tool used to assess the environment. It
is used to gather important information which is then used in strategic
planning. Strengths and weaknesses are internal in an organization. They
relate to resources owned by an organization that you have control over and
also the extent of its marketing.
Opportunities and threats exist in the external environment.
Opportunities relate to the market, new technologies, and the external factors
such as government policies, climate, and trends. Threats replace what the
competitors are doing. It also includes legal and other constraints. Now that
you have read some important considerations to explore to be successful in
any business, you are now ready to explore more about the environment and
market.
To begin with, let’s find out your knowledge about the environment and
market in Animation.

6
D What is in?

Let’s have a review of the previous lesson, look for ten PECs in the
jumbled letters below and encircle each word. Search in all directions:
top-down, left-right, diagonal and reverse.

7
D What is it?

THE ENVIRONMENT AND MARKET

Environment is defined as all the internal and external factors that
affect how the company functions including employees, customers,
management, supply and demand and business regulations.
Market, in this concept is what we call as the potential customers.
Customers are important because they drive revenues; without them,
businesses have nothing to offer.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN ANIMATION

• Art directors have the final say on what footage
or stills are to be included in the final cut
• May also be required to train junior staff and
manage budgeting requirements.

Stop Motion Animator

• They set up physical rigs, usually to
specification, in which to work with the models
(puppets) and camera equipment before using
specialist software to bring it all to life in the
editing suite.

3D Modeler
• A 3D modeler works from the ground up to
bring fully rendered models and
environments to life.
• Can find work not just in film and video
games but also in engineering, advertising,
manufacturing, architecture and many
other fields.

Flash Animator
• Flash animators combine skills in
illustration, graphic design and
composition in order to create compelling
2D and 3D animation in Adobe Flash.
8
D What is it?

Storyboard Artist
• Storyboard artists usually work hand-in-
hand with animation and/or filmmaking
teams to help map out a story from start to
finish long before work starts.

Forensic Animator

skills to help investigators piece together crime
scenes and collate evidence for presentation to a
jury.

a realistic look, but may also have to use
all their graphic skills to create effects
not usually found in nature.

over the final appearance of an
animation, and adds a layer of polish
and keep the entire project looking
consistent.

IDENTIFYING CUSTOMER NEEDS AND WANTS

Given below are simple steps in order to determine needs and
wants of your potential market.
 Identify your target market.
Target identifiers such as profession and professional level of
income; where they live; any hobbies or recreational activities; and age, as
well as gender and orientation, all inform a business as to which
characteristics are shared, and which characteristics marketers should
appeal to.

9
D What is it?

2. Establish how customers shop for products/services.

This is understanding how they shop, as to whether it is a spur-of-
the-moment, impulse purchase or is a purchasing decision that has
resulted from a measured, cautious decision. Studying these patterns will
enable businesses to know how to lay out their stores, both virtual as well
as brick-and-mortar stores.
3. Understand why customers buy what they buy.
Getting to the root factors, like branded vs generic, cost and
impulses, enables a company to promote what works and to do away with
what isn’t as cost efficient. Maximizing the number of things offered that
suit what customers want is the key to lasting in business.
4. Listen to what customers say.
Customers speak with their money but they also speak loudly on
social media and in person. As tough as it can sometimes be, to hear
critiques of the goods or services you offer, it is invaluable information
that no marketing strategy can give you. It’s also important to find out
what people think of your competitors' offerings because you may be able
to take advantage by offering something they're lacking.

MARKET ANALYSIS USING SWOT

The SWOT analysis process is a brainstorming technique. It’s
designed to help you understand what might differentiate you from your
competition and what resources you have to execute upon that
opportunity. In the same breath, the SWOT framework helps you
understand what might prevent you from seizing that opportunity.

STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES

• Advantages, tools, unique differentiators, • Things you lack, factors that need improve-
resources, & techniques. ments, & resource limitations.

• Examples: Delivers on time, easy to work • Examples: Limited manpower, no physical

with, thinks outside the box, etc. location, etc.

OPPORTUNITIES THREATS

• What you can offer that the competition • Conditions that may prevent achieving goals,
cannot, innovation, & start of new trend. & what competitors can do that you cannot.

• Examples: Upgrades in skills and tools, offer • Examples: Limited manpower, no physical
new products, engage in social media, etc. location, etc.

10
E What is more?

entrepreneur with expertise not only in Animation but in ICT in general.

Opportunities and Threats to help you with your marketing plan. Give at
least 3 examples in each quadrant.
