THE TOP FIVE RISKY
BEHAVIORS OF ADOLESCENTS
1. Behavior that may lead to violence or injury.

This category includes being in a fight, bullying, carrying a

weapon, self-harm, and attempting suicide.

2. Unsafe sexual behavior.

This category includes not using protection during

intercourse, not being tested for HIV or other sexually
transmitted diseases, and also drinking alcohol and using
drugs during or before intercourse.
3. Alcohol, substance, and tobacco use.

habits, inadequate physical activity, and excessive social
media and screen time.
Effects of Risky Behaviors of Adolescents

POSITIVE
Teaches responsibility
Promotes learning from mistakes
Effects of Risky Behaviors of Adolescents

NEGATIVE
Health - drug and alcohol use can cause impaired judgement,
physical harm, and health problems.
Legal - criminal convictions, fines or imprisonment for
possession of illegal substances or gang involvement. Sexting
may lead to charges with pornography related offenses.
Relationship and Social - under the influence of drugs or alcohol,
adolescents may behave differently and do damage to their
reputation.
How can we protect
adolescents from such risky
behaviors?
1. Good parent-child relationship.

Adolescent development is significantly influenced by good

parenting practices. When parents have a good relationship
with their children, they are more open to parental advice.

2. Provide autonomy with guidance.

Autonomy is not complete freedom to do whatever one

wants. It is an exercise in self-governance and limits.
Research shows that adolescents who receive autonomy are
more likely to avoid getting into risky behaviors.
3. Give clear boundaries and reasons.

Discuss the reasons behind limits with adolescents, so that

they can develop a decision-making process that underlies
their behavior choices.

4. Talk about risky behaviors.

Adolescents who get information about risky behaviors tend

to be less influenced. Education along with intervention can
reduce adolescents' involvement with risky behaviors.
5. Seek treatment for trauma.

After traumatic events, adolescents must be monitored for

mental health issues even if they appear fine because one
night stand are more likely to occur among neglected,
sexually abused, and physically abused adolescents.
Why is it important to
encourage safe risk-taking
among adolescents?
Young people who engage in risky behaviors
early in life, such as sexual activity and drug
use, often have poorer health later in life,
1
lower educational attainment, and lower
economic productivity as adults. That is why
it is critical for parents and educators to
intervene as early as possible.
2
"Every risk is worth taking as long as
it's for the good cause, and contributes
to a good life".
- Richard Branson
