As I finally complete this SBA, I would like to commend my teacher, Miss. Sealy for

all the material and explanations she gave us on the topic. I would also like to give an

honourable mention to my classmates, friends and family who helped me by dedicating their

time to answer my questionnaire, they were also emotionally present for me during this

period of completing SBAs.

A special thanks can go out to my cousin who tutored me in completing this SBA by

correcting my bad grammar, guiding me towards knowledgable facts and also helping me

with the questionnaire section, all of this and he wasnt the best Social Studies or English

student.
Introduction

The social problem I will be investigating is Racial Discrimination in the Caribbean.

According to Race and Racism in The Americas and Caribbean by Anthony Baxter, most

people of this region believe that racism isn't alive which is quite the opposite.

This topic was not one of popularity due to the fact that the Caribbean is heavily

populated by one colour and isn’t a region of racism which wouldn’t make my method of

investigation experiential, but although I have discovered this challenge, they are still aspects

of racism around the Caribbean which will be touched during the production of this SBA.

Racism is the mental belief that specific groups of humans possess different

behavioral traits corresponding to birthed attributes and can be divided and ranked based on

the superiority of one race. Being a civilian of Barbados leads you to be naturally educated of

certain races and their stereotypes due to social media, history and much more things

surrounding the untaught. In case you were wondering, a stereotype is a widely held but fixed

and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing according to Oxford

Languages.

Racism can be showcased in various forms by various people within a society.

Governments can turn away from a less favoured race, public places such as school hospitals

etc, can discriminate against a certain race and sports organizations, teams and clubs may

have an interference in allowing a less favoured race partake. While completing this topic, I

would like to figure out the main causes of racism, understand why some racial attackers

decide to target certain ethnic groups and the number of experiences of Racial Discrimination

which some people go through.

Statements Of The Problem

Main Problem Statement

● Is the Racism within Combermere School, Barbados something of serious concern?

Reason For Research

I felt the need to choose this topic due to the information I’ve discovered when

following and watching sports. My beliefs tell me that no matter what colour or race you are,

you are a human being, who deserves just as much respect as anyone else. You can see racial

discrimination in sports, social media, in your nation etc but you would rarely see consistent

awareness on the problem which is why I wanted to investigate this topic so that I can gain

more knowledge.
Method Of Investigation

To collect data, I decided to make an online google form so that people can access and

answer the questionnaire and submit it where bar charts and creative responses would be

shown to me.

Using the google forms questionnaire is a brilliant to collect data on this topic, it creates

multiple advantages such as:

● The google forms makes automatic pie charts for your answers after each question.

● The person answering the questionnaire can access and answer it without being in

physical touch of the questionnaire.

● The amount of responses are not limited online unlike the printed questionnaires.

Instruments Used to Collect Data
Procedures Used to Collect Data

Barbados, the island I reside in, has a recorded population of 299,318 people as of March the

11th, 2023 according to Worldometer.info, and with this number, the majority of the

population takes up black as their ethnicity.

The respondents of the questionnaire were also of Barbadian nationality, was students of

Combermere School and were in an age range of 13 to 18 years old. The survey was open for

answering during the 10th of March, 2023 until the 15th of March, 2023

In writing my questions for this questionnaire, I tried to ask questions which could help me

understand the public thinking behind the causes, solutions and experiences of racial

discrimination. The multiple choice solutions for each of the queries was to make the

questionnaire less challenging for the respondents to answer. In addition, it’s helps the survey

keep a level of organization with the responses. Adding the feature which allowed the

respondent to give an answer which isn't listed was also implemented in reassurance of not

missing any information that could be important.

Although I was aiming for 30 responses on the questionnaire, I received 25 completed

questionnaires through online distribution to friends, family and others which was filled with

interesting information that may shock you.

Presentation and Explanation Of Data

Within this section of the SBA, the data from the 25 answered questionnaires will be
showcased in the form of bar charts, tables but mainly pie charts.

Pie Chart Showing The Ethnic Groups of The Respondents

Bar Chart Displaying The Least Populated Race Within Our Respondents’ Opinion
Pie Chart Showing The No. of Racist Experiences Respondents Faced
Histogram Illustrating The Respondents’ Main Cause of Racial Discrimination

In Figure 4 tells us that the respondents believe in racial profiling and historical events as the
main causes of racial discrimination due to both answers having 9 respondents.

Interpretation Of Data

The collection of data was to understand the thinking of the public before analysing other

components of this project which in my opinion, was very successful due to the variety of

answers we received. I studied the causes, effects and reasons for racism, then with this

knowledge, I discovered and shared within the second paragraph.

After completing the various components of SBA led me to understand that my

country doesnt have an abundance in mixed ethnicities due to 96% of respondents claiming to

be black and it doesn't possess heavy racial slander based on the 56% who said the same and

the 8% who were unsure on the matter and stated maybe. So how do our young citizens

receive racism? They receive racism via technology and social media.

Figure 1 tells us that the population within this country and the population within

Combermere School is mainly blacks. Figure 2 tells us about the respondents’ observations of

the least populated race in this country. I agree with the respondents because Barbados

doesn't have a heavy population of white. Figure 3 shows that respondents experienced forms

of racism during their lifetime, which was surprisinging considering the ratio of blacks to

other races. In Figure 4 tells us that the respondents believe in racial profiling and historical

events as the main causes of racial discrimination due to both answers having 9 respondents.

Figure 5 displays the respondents’ opinion on the emotions victims feel after being

racially discriminated. The answers Angry and sad, normal and inferior were all added by the

respondents while Self Aware was chosen by 9 respondents, Angry was chosen by 9 and sad

was chosen 4 times. The purple and green within Figure 6 pie chart are two respondents

believing in all the answers listed are true although one respondent meant to say all three in

this answer but nevertheless, 10 people took up the yellow section, 9 people completed the

red section and 4 respondents took the blue section of the chart. Once again, one respondent

in Figure 7 responded with all of the above but made a typographical error. 10 respondents
selected “Safe environment for every human,” 12 persons selected “for racial equality” and 2

respondents chose “elimination of stereotypes.”Figure 8 showcases split opinions on this

question. One respondent typed all of the above, 12 persons choosing the blue coded answer,

6 persons choosing the red coded question and 2 persons selecting the purple coded question.

Figure 9 states that the respondents of my country, Barbados believe that this is a light

country in terms of racial slander. 15 respondents said no, one person said yes and 9

respondents said maybe.

The various trends within the survey is what led me to my conclusion. Fig 1,3 and 4

heavily impacted my problem-solving on the matter, they showed what the majority and

minorities were thinking of when answering the questionnaire.

Findings

1. Barbados youth can be targeted due to the technology and the alarming growth of

social media which allows racists to say whatever they want to, towards our youth

online.

2. Parents and teenagers who are using social media platforms are not

educated/prepared in handling these incidents.

3. Racial discrimination makes our youth feel trapped from other options due to their

race which can be detrimental for their development.

Recommendations

Racism is a pervasive issue that has long persisted within societies. It is a systematic sort of

prejudice that can manifest itself in a variety of ways, from overt bias to unintentional

prejudice. Law and education are two ideas that could be implemented to end racism.

Education is the most important factor in combating racism. Individuals need to be

made aware of racism's drawbacks and how it affects both individuals and society as a whole.

One can help people become more aware of their own prejudices and build empathy and

compassion for different cultures and ethnic groups by teaching them on the history of

racism, the effects of racist conduct, and the value of diversity. Higher education institutions

should promote this.

Second, using the law effectively is essential in ending racism. Governments should

implement more laws that safeguard citizens from racial discrimination and encourage

equitable opportunity for all. Equally important are holding individuals and organizations

responsible for their racist actions and ensuring that those who have been hurt by racism

receive justice. Laws that promote diversity and level the playing field for underrepresented

groups are often known as affirmative action laws.

I would start with education if I were to put one of these suggestions into practice. In

order to educate people about racism and its impacts, the value of diversity, and the abilities

required to form inclusive organizations, I would design a system. Because they are places

where individuals spend the majority of their time and have a big influence on their views

and behavior, the program would concentrate on educational institutions and workplaces. All

staff and students would be required to complete the curriculum, which would be provided

through seminars, workshops, and online resources. We can encourage acceptance and

understanding of racism by educating people about it, which will ultimately lead to a more

just and equitable society.
