Presented By- BHARATI SAIKRUPA

PhD Student
OBJECTIVES :

After the completion of this topic, you will be able to :

1. Understand the meaning of Graphic Tools
2. Types of Graphic Softwares used
3. Understand the significance of using Graphic Tools
in e- content preparation
Graphics Origin
The first computer graphics design
system - developed by Evan
Sutherland as his PhD thesis at MIT
in 1963 called Sketchpad .

Allows user to sketch a mechanical

part on a computer screen, place
constraints on the part, and have the
computer calculate the exact
design of the part.
WHAT DOES GRAPHIC MEAN
Any visual representation of data and includes a variety of forms including
drawings, photographs, line art, graphs, diagrams, numbers, symbols,
geometric designs, maps, and engineering drawings.

Graphics may be images only or may also include text and they can be used for
decorative or functional purposes, including educating, informing, illustrating, or
entertaining.
When applied to computers, the term graphics is commonly used to refer to 2D
digital images that are displayed, stored, created, or edited on a computer.
WHAT IS GRAPHIC SOFTWARE ?
Any computer-based application , browser-based platform or desktop
application that allows users to create, edit, and display graphics.

Graphic software or image editing software is program or collection of programs

that enable a person to manipulate visual images on a computer.

Examples of graphics software - Microsoft Excel , PowerPoint, Adobe

PhotoShop, CorelDraw, Paint Programs, Canva, Adobe Lightroom.
TYPES OF GRAPHIC IMAGES :
1. Raster Graphics (Pixel Based Images)
2. Vector graphics (Path Based Images)

An image is either comprised of a series of small dots (pixels) or a series of

commands about how to draw an image.

How to know the difference between pixel- and path-based images - by zooming
on them. If they zoom very close without appearing fuzzy and blotchy, you're
working with a path-based image.

Note: Raster software cannot read the format of a vector graphic, and vice versa.
RASTER GRAPHICS :
● Raster graphics are formed by a matrix of pixels.
● Raster software is graphics software used to create, enhance, or modify
raster graphics.
● Common raster graphic file formats include BMP (bitmap), JPEG (Joint
Photographic Experts Group), TIFF (tagged image file format), and GIF
(graphic interchange format). BMPs or bitmaps are resolution-dependent
and support 24-bit color. JPEGs are compressed and sacrifice image
quality in exchange for a reduction in image size. TIFFs are used with
high-resolution images. GIFs display up to 256 colors, feature built-in
compression, and work with most Web browsers.
VECTOR GRAPHICS :
● Vector graphics are used in applications designed to perform digital
diagramming or computer-aided design (CAD).
● In simplest terms, vector graphic software is graphics software used to
create, enhance, and modify graphics that represent digital images as a
collection of geographic entities (i.e., points, lines, and shapes).
● Examples of vector graphic file formats are DXF (data exchange format)
and WMF (Windows meta-file).
CATEGORIES OF GRAPHIC SOFTWARES :
1.Illustration apps,

2.Photo editors,

3.Web publishing and digital printing apps,

4.Page layout software.

Note : It does not mean a particular app can not be included in more than one
category. In fact, there are photo editing apps that allow graphic designers and
photographers to create digital art as well.
POPULAR SOFTWARES :
1. Adobe Illustrator

Available through the Adobe Creative Cloud app, available for PC and macOS
● Category: Vector graphics
● Features: Templates, blank document presets, workspaces for touch-enabled
devices, sync with InDesign
● What it’s best for: Designing vector graphics that can be scaled larger or
smaller without affecting image quality
2. Canva for Teams

Available in the cloud

● Category: Display ad design, photo editing, desktop publishing, data
visualization, design systems
● Features: Collaborate on designs, brand templates, design approval, asset
and permission management
● What it's best for: Scaling the entire design process, teamwide, for people at
any skill level
3. Adobe InDesign

Available through the Adobe Creative Cloud app, available for PC and macOS
● Category: Desktop publishing
● Features: Templates, blank document presets, workspaces for touch-enabled
devices, sync with Illustrator
● What it's best for: Creating long-form multi-page documents,

such as books, magazines, reports, or brochures

4. Microsoft Publisher

Available for PC
● Category: Desktop publishing
● Features: Pre-designed templates for creating greeting cards, yearbooks,
email newsletters, etc.
● What it's best for: Precise layouts and styling for professional publication.
5. Adobe Photoshop

Available for for Windows and macOS.

● Category : Raster graphics editor .

● Features : Edit and compose raster images in multiple layers and supports
masks, alpha compositing and several color models.
● What it's best for : Small retouching changes to mind-bending photo art, crop
photos, adjust photo composition, correct lighting, and make any subject
imaginable look its absolute best.
SIGNIFICANCE OF GRAPHIC TOOLS :
1. Aids in managing cognitive load, ensuring that the information presented is

within the learner's processing capacity.

2. Enables learners to process information both visually and verbally, enhancing

comprehension and retention.

3. Enhances the organization and perception of information.

4. Establishes visual hierarchy, guiding learners' attention to key information and

fostering effective information processing.
