The generation gap at work

GenZ, millenials, Gen X and Boomers… for the first time ever, four
generations are working together in the office. But can all of them work
together and be happy?
A recent report by Anphabe on 2023 November unveiled that
75% of Employees Feel 'Generational Conflict' Due to Gen Z in
the Workplace

At the conference recognizing the top 100 workplaces in


Vietnam, the survey was conducted from April to
September, involving nearly 64,000 employees, 752
businesses, and 150 leaders.

perspectives and skillsets. However, an unavoidable phenomenon at
work environment is generational conflict.

Currently, Generation Z (individuals born between


1997 and 2012) constitutes about 30% of the
workforce in these companies. This generation is
known for its potential, creativity, and adeptness
with digital transformation.
The survey specifically noted pronounced conflicts
between older generations like Baby Boomers (born
1946-1964), Generation X (1965-1980), Generation
Y (1981-1996), and Generation Z.
According to Thanh Nguyen, CEO of Anphabe, the differences in
perspectives and work styles between Generation Z and other
generations are causing internal conflicts that need resolution. She
noted that despite differences, all generations share a strong
commonality: the desire to create social impact.

It's noteworthy that up to 91% of Generation Z express the need to


"create social value" when seeking new job opportunities. They seek to
work for companies contributing to addressing social issues like
inequality, education, sustainable development, poverty, and climate
change.

Differing work-life balance expectations


also presented another challenge for
employers, with more than two-thirds
(68%) of talent professionals agreeing this
was a hurdle for their company.
LinkedIn’s survey data revealed that while at least half
of the respondents from all generations consider work-
life balance to be a top factor when considering a new
job, Millennials and Gen X place the most emphasis on it. These generations also value flexible work
arrangements the most, with 35% of Millennials and 32% of Gen Xers saying these options are a key
consideration, compared to 28% of Baby Boomers and Gen Zers.
Although these differences are not too profound, they can lead to friction. For employees who’ve spent
most of their careers working in cultures where longer hours and fewer breaks were tacitly encouraged,
new policies may take a little getting used to.

Just as expectations about working life have changed over the decades, so too
have methods of communication. This has created friction among employees
from different generations, with 63% of talent professionals reporting that
differing communication styles present a challenge for their company.

Besides, behaviors are different among generations is one of the reasons of


generation gap at work, specifying their priorities and attitudes.

The people of Baby Boomers and Generation X consider people of Generation Y as “young smart alec”,
“immature”, “less visionary” and somewhat possessing minimal ethics whereas people of Generation Y
consider Baby Boomers and Generation X as “less productive”, “inefficient” and “technologically
backward”.
The fact is that everyone cannot have similar capabilities, mindsets, attitudes and behaviors. That is how
human beings have been created. In fact different mindsets and capabilities are important in achieving
organizational excellence but positive and adaptive attitude and respect of each other is extremely vital.
