Dance: The dance is separated into two parts

1. Classical Dance

2. Folk Dance

Classical Dance
The dance that describes the character of God, Goddess, and religious scripture is called classical
dance.

The first formal mention of classical dance is found in Bharata Muni's famous work, Natya
Shastra

According to the Ministry of Art and Culture there are 8 classical dances found in india, while
Chhau is considered a semi-classical dance category.

1. Bharatnatyam is an Indian classical dance form that is believed to have been revealed by
Lord Brahma to the Bharata and is also the oldest and most famous dance of the temples of
Tamil Nadun. It evolved from Ekaharya Lasyanga"
Tillana is one of the presentation forms in Bharatanavam that is generally performed at the end
of the concert.

2) Kuchipudi

 This dance is dedicated to lord Vishnu and Krishna. It is related to Andhra Pradesh
It is a dance which combines speech, mime and pure dance
Non-Narrative and Abstract Dancing form is best describes the meaning of Nritta
in the Kuchipudi dance form

 Siddh Endra Yogi was an artist of the 17th


century AD composed Bhaamaakalaapam, a dance drama based on Kuchipudi

 Kuchipudi classical dance is accompanied with Carnatic Music

8.Sattriya:
This dance form was introduced in 15th century AD by Mahapurusha Sankaradeva that is
developed from the Vaishnavite monasteries of Assam.It is influenced by bihu folk dance .

9) Chaau: Semi Classical dance 3 styles named after the location where they are performed

1. Mayurbanj - Odisha
2. Seraikella - Jharkhand
3. Purulia - West Bengal
Seraikella and Purulia use mask.
Chhau dance is performed during religious festivals, especially during the spring festival
of Chaitra Parva, and depicts mythological stories and characters.
The Purulia Chhau dance is celebrated during the Sun festival.
Pandit Gopal Prasad Dubey a well-known classical dancer of India awarded Padma Shri
for his contribution in the field of Chhau dance in 2012. He is the leading exponent of the
Seraikella variant of the art form.
