1
Overview of IITM initiatives
Over the past three years, Rural Technology Action Group, Tamil Nadu (RuTAG-TN), IIT Madras has
developed jacquard handlooms for weaving design mats using fine Korai grass. Upon numerous
trials, feedback and modifications with the help of weavers in Pathamadai and Veeravanallur, an
electronic jacquard handloom has been found to be most suited for production of designer fine
Korai Pathamadai mats. The productivity of the process has increased up to 300% as compared to
the traditional loom. A weaver can sit comfortably on the ergonomically superior loom and weave
an intricate design mat in 2-3 days as opposed to earlier 6-9 days.

Upon receiving positive feedback from Jeenath Self Help Group, Pathamadai where the handloom
has been running satisfactorily since July 2016, RuTAG and Centre for Social Innovation and
Entrepreneurship (CSIE), IIT Madras collaborated for a social media marketing of Pathamadai
products to improve the demand. CSIE made initiatives to bring markets closer to the artisans
through social media strategies, providing stall spaces and has enabled e-commerce
transactions till now.

Sanction of funding from Poompuhar for Pattamadai

Encouraged by the potential to develop Pathamadai mats sector and interest of the registered
mat weaving co-operative societies, RuTAG and CSIE submitted a joint proposal to The
Tamilnadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd. (TNHDC-Poompuhar) titled ‘Business
Development and Livelihood Enhancement of Pathamadai weavers community’ to establish a
Common Facility Center (CFC) in Pathamadai and received sanction of the project in February,
2017 (Letter no. 1437/ DC/ 2017 dated 09.02.2018). The project in Pathamadai is for duration of
1 year with a budget of Rs. 47 lakhs. This project focuses on infrastructure development in
premises of The Pattamadai Fine Mat Weavers Co-operative Society Limited.

Proposal

Infrastructure development in Veeravanallur

From our preliminary studies, we have observed that Veeravanallur Mat Weavers Co-operative
Society Limited has a good potential to adopt this technology and be a part of the revival of this
languishing handicraft of making fine Korai designer mats. However, as the Government of Tamil
Nadu has currently sanctioned establishment of CFC only in Pattamadai (Refer: Govt. Order (Ms)
No.01 dated 03.01.2018), this proposal suggests commissioning of 2 electronic jacquard handlooms
at the Veeravanallur Mat Weavers Co-operative Society Limited for the benefit of the mat industry
in Tirunelveli district.

Skilling of weavers in Pathamadai and Veeravanallur

The commissioning of new electronic jacquard handlooms in Pathamadai and Veeravanallur is sure
to attract existing and newer weavers to the profession. In order to utilize the technology
effectively, RuTAG and CSIE plan to conduct 60-70 day training for 5 weavers each in 2 sessions at
the two locations. The module for this training is:

i. Korai grass pre-processing: 30 days: Includes cutting, soaking and dyeing processes. Will be
conducted by experienced weavers of the society.
ii. Weaving on electronic jacquard handloom: 30 days: Weaving new intricate designs for fine
Korai mats and troubleshooting operation on loom. To be conducted by Dr. S. Ganesan,
Project Adviser, RuTAG and co-designer of the technology.
iii. Computer designing using software: 10 days: Basic use of software for creating new designs
and converting them to a format usable on the jacquard will be taught to select students. To
be taught by Project Associate, RuTAG.
iv. Social Media marketing: 1 day: Basics of marketing for mats and value-added products using
social media and online retail platforms. To be conducted by Project Associate, CSIE.

As proper skilling of the weavers in Pathamadai after establishment of CFC would require more
financial support, this proposal includes skilling of weavers from both Pathamadai and Veeravanallur
societies.
