87.0.x.x – 87.51.x.x
Transformation
• HMC Rebuild to upgrade the base Operating System
Preload
• Acquire code from source (media or network), distribute to components (staging for use later)
After the CDA Preload is started the following steps will be performed automatically:
- Acquire of the release bundle
- Prepare the HMC with any code update specific fixes
- Distribute the code updates to the LPAR and install them to an alternate BOS
- Perform scheduled CDA Preverify scans until the distributed code is ready to be activated by the user for up to 11 days.

Prerequisites to start a Code Load
v4.71 – Page 4
STEP A - Before starting Preload – Check HMC hard drive is good – ICS Image
Note: If you just came from APP C, no need to install this one again – Continue to STEP 1
Media Acquire:
Insert the release bundle DVD into the primary HMC1 drive. You do not need to be logged in, but you can be.
The HMC will automatically begin acquiring the release bundle from the DVD. The welcome screen will state that the
HMC is “Importing media”. If a user is logged in, a progress panel will automatically pop up. After the acquire is complete,
the welcome screen and progress window will be updated to let the user know the acquire is complete and media can be
ejected. Preload will automatically continue with code distribution. ~ 45 minutes
Media should be removed from HMC drive.
For machines with Dual HMC, the bundle DVD removed from HMC1 should NOT be inserted into the HMC2 drive. The
bundle will automatically be acquired from HMC1 via internal network.
When complete the welcome screen and progress window will be updated to let the user know the acquire is complete.
No other actions will be automatically performed on HMC2.
Network Acquire:
Log in to HMC1
Select: Updates
Select: Radio button on the HMC line
Select: Acquire Code Images
a) CDA4TP (Please follow CDA4TP acquire instructions – located on the Tips db or Wiki)
A progress panel will automatically pop up stating that acquire is complete. Preload distribute will automatically continue
from HMC1.
For Dual HMC, acquire code bundle from network on HMC2. Code will only acquire on HMC2
v4.71 – Page 5
STEP 2 Automatic Distribution
NOTE: Do not run CDA Preverify manually, the code load process will execute it automatically.
CDA will continue to run regular CDA Preverify checks in the background and open serviceable events for any issues
found. Anytime the user logs in during this time frame, the preload activation panel will come up which also shows the
last CDA Preverify scan time. If the user chooses to cancel the automatically opened panel, it will not be shown again
until the next login.
After the distribute completes, the user will have 11 days to activate the preloaded code. During this time the machine
can be used normally, including making logical configuration changes and repairing any issues.
Note: If cancel is selected, the preload status panel will be closed. To return to this panel go to the Updates menu, select
the Storage Facility from the target list and choose the “Display Preload Status” utility.
When the code distribution is complete, SRC BEFCDA01 will be created and called home.
If Status is running, the AOS service needs to be restarted after the HMC Code Activation
Log in to the HMC and remove any Microcode media from the drive.
If already logged in and the preload status panel has been closed, go to the
Updates menu, select the Storage Facility from the target list, choose the “Display Preload Status” utility
Yes | No
Do NOT continue if the Preload has EXPIRED – you MUST restart the Preload (STEP 1) and then continue.
- If a window is shown with a list of serviceable events, open the serviceable event management task and repair each of
the issues.
If all conditions above are met, and you are ready to Start the HMC update:
Select: Yes, to start the HMC update
Proceeding with update will take the HMC offline. Do you want to continue?
