Introduction to Geography

I.Introduction
> Geography is the study of places and the relationships between people and their
environment. It seeks to understand where things are found,why they are there,and
how they develop and change over time.
> geography is the study of the earth's landscape environment and the interactions
between humans and their surroundings.It encompasses a wide range of topics from
physical features like mountains and rivers to human activities such as
urbanization and globalization.

A. The importance of Geography


> Geography is the important because it helps us understand the word we live in. It
provides a framework for understanding the complex relationships between humans and
their environment, and it help us make sense of the worlds cultural and physical
diversity.

• Branches of Geography

1. Physical Geography - this branch of geography deals with study of natural


features of the earth including climate,landforms,and ecosystem.
2. Human Geography - this branch fucuses on people and their communities, cultures,
economics and interactions with the environment.
3.Geographical Information System - this branch uses digital technology to analyze
and represent geographical data .

1.Earth's structure
-core, mantle, crust
2. Plate Tectonics

- mountains,plains, plateaus
4. Climate
- climate zones

• Human Geography

Population distribution
Physical factors:
1.topography - mountains regions and areas with rugged terrain often have sparse
population due to limited habitable land
2.climate- extreme climates such as deserts ,polar regions, or areas with high
humidity may deter settlement .

Human factors

1.Economic opportunities - regions with abundant job opportunities, industries and


resources tend to attarct more people
2. Urbanization - Cities and urban areas with amenities,service ñ,and cultural
attractions tend to have higher population concentrations.
III. Maps in Geography

Types of Maps;

1.Political Map - is a type of a map that displays boundaries and bonds between
countries,states,provinces, cities and other developments.
2.Psical Map- fucos on displaying the natural feature of the earth surface
3.Climate change - is a type of thematic map that illustrates the different climate
regions and zone accross a specific area or the entire globe

Geographic Information System GIS:

1.Urban planning - refers to the process of designing, regulating and manaythe


development of urban areas to create sustainable functional and aesthetically
pleasing communities.
2.Environmental Management - refers to the process of overseeing and implementing
strategies, policies,and practices to protect, conserve and sustainably manage
natural resources and the environment.
3.Disaster Response - refers to the coordinated efforts and actions taken to the
immediate needs of individuals, communities, and infructure affected by a natural
or man made disaster.

IV. Discussions

A. Key concepts in Geography


•Location: every point on earth has a specific location that can be identified
using a coordinate system
•Region: a region is an area of land that has common features
•Scale: In geography, scale refers to the ratio between the size of things in the
real world and rhe size of those same things on a map.
•Space: refers to the physical gap or interval between two objects.
•Place: refers to the physical and human aspects of a location

V. Contemporary Issues in Geography


>Geography plays a crucial role in understanding some of the critical issues facing
our world today, such as climate change urbanization and migration.

VI. Conclusions

> Geography is a diverse field that offers as tools to better understand the world
we live in. By studying geography, we can begin to understand the relationships and
common issues that link humans and our environment. This module provide basic
introduction to geography and its importance, but the study of geography
encompasses much more. As you delve deeper into this subject, you'll discover the
compexities and wonders of the worlds landscape, cultures and place.
