Khi động từ giới thiệu (said, asked, told …) ở quá khứ, ta phải áp dụng các quy tắc:
- Lùi thì của động từ về 1 thì (QK → QKD, HTHT → QKHT …)
- Chuyển đổi chủ ngữ, tân ngữ, tính từ sở hữu, đại từ sở hữu, đại từ phản thân sao cho phù hợp
- Thay đổi trạng ngữ chỉ nơi chốn và thời gian sao cho phù hợp

- Động từ khuyết thiếu trong câu gián tiếp: can → could, may → might, must → had to, will → would
Ex: “I can cook tonight.” → Lan said (that) she could cook that night.
- Câu điều kiện trong câu gián tiếp: ĐK loại 1 → lùi về quá khứ, ĐKL2 và ĐKL3 không lùi thì.
Ex: “If I had enough money, I would buy a new car.”
→ He said if he had enough money, he would buy a new car.
