Let’s Think About It!

1. What did you assume about todays learning

before we started ?
2. What do you think are the main causes of
climate change?
3. How does our energy use contribute to climate
change?
Let’s Explore!

What Is Climate Change?

• Climate change refers to long-term shifts in

temperatures and weather patterns.
• Climate change, also
called global warming,
refers to the rise in
average surface
temperatures on earth.
Let’s Explore!

• NASA defines climate

change as: “a broad
range of global
phenomena created
predominantly by
burning fossil fuels
which add heat-trapping
gases to Earth’s
atmosphere.
Let’s Explore!

What Are the Causes of Climate Change?

capable of supporting life.
Let’s Explore!

• Greenhouse gases that contribute to the

greenhouse effect include:

Water Nitrous
vapor oxide
(H₂O) (N₂O)

Carbon Methane
dioxide (CH4)
(CO₂)
Let's Explore!

What are the Effects of Climate Change?

• More frequent and severe droughts

• Snowstorms and extreme winter weather
• Warming ocean temperatures
• Coral reef bleaching
• Forest fires
• Loss of wildlife habitat
Let's Explore!

How Is Climate Change Affecting the Philippines?

• The Philippines is geographically vulnerable

due to its location and surrounding warm
waters.
• Climate change is causing stronger and more
frequent typhoons, displacing millions of
people.
• Lack of natural barriers and deforestation of
mangroves worsen the impact of typhoons.
Let's Explore!

How Is Climate Change Affecting the Philippines?

• Rising sea levels threaten coastal

communities.
• Weather patterns are becoming unpredictable
with blurred lines between wet and dry
seasons.
Let's Explore!

Pia Ranada (January 22, 2014) stated six ways by which

climate change affects our country:
1. More intense El Nino
– This disrupts weather patterns,
causing unpredictable storms and
droughts.
2. Sea surface temperatures to rise
– This fuels more powerful typhoons
and harms marine life like coral reefs,
threatening food security.
Let's Explore!

3. Ocean acidification
– As oceans absorb more carbon dioxide,
they become acidic, harming shellfish and
fish development.
4. Sea levels to rise by 4 to 6 meters
– Melting glaciers will cause sea levels to
rise, submerging low-lying coastal areas.
Let's Explore!

5. Tropical cyclones to intensify

– Climate change is linked to the creation
of typhoons in new areas and stronger storms
overall.

6. Rainfall, river flow, and flooding to intensify

– Rainfall patterns will become more erratic,
with some areas experiencing intense flooding
and others facing droughts. This harms
agriculture and increases landslides.
Let's Explore!

Climate change also impacts our country’s ability

to feed people. Karen Bermejo (2017) wrote:

1. Climate change is altering production

ecosystems and compromising food security
and nutrition for millions of people in the
Philippines, according to the United Nations
Food and Agriculture Organization (UN FAO).
Let’s Explore!

Climate change also impacts our country’s ability

to feed people. Karen Bermejo (2017) wrote:

2. Climate change also affects farmers.

3. Food security declines.
4. Malnutrition increases.
Let’s Explore!

What is the Energy Crisis?

• It’s a situation where the supply of energy resources
can’t meet the demand.
• This is often due to limited natural resources like
fossil fuels.
• These resources take a very long time to replenish.
• The solution involves a shift towards renewable
resources and conservation efforts.
• The complexity of the crisis and lack of public
awareness hinder progress.
Let's Explore!

Causes of the Energy Crisis

Some causes of the energy crisis were identified as

follows:
1.Overconsumption
2.Overpopulation
3.Poor Infrastructure
4.Unexplored Renewable Energy Options
Let’s Explore!

5. Delay in Commissioning of Power Plants

6. Wastage of Energy
7. Poor Distribution System
8. Major Accidents and Natural Calamities
9. Wars and Attacks
10. Miscellaneous Factors
• Tax hikes
• Military coup
• Political events
• Severe hot summers or cold winters
Let's Explore!

What are Possible Solutions to the Energy Crisis?

1. Move towards Renewable Resources

– To reduce the world’s dependence on non-
renewable resources and to improve overall
conservation efforts.

2. Buy Energy Efficient Products.

– Replace traditional bulbs with CFL’s and LED’s.
Let's Explore!

3. Lighting Controls
– Preset lighting controls, slide lighting, touch
dimmers, integrated lighting controls are few of the
lighting controls that can help to conserve energy
and reduce overall lighting costs.

4. Easier Grid Access

– People who use different options to generate
power must be given permission to plug into the
grid and get credit for power you feed into it.
Let's Explore!

5. Energy Simulation
– Can be used by big corporations to redesign building
unit and reduce running business energy cost.

6. Perform Energy Audit

– A process that helps to identify the areas where your
home or office is losing energy and identify steps you can
take to improve energy efficiency.
Let's Explore!

7. Common Stand On Climate Change

– Both developed and developing countries
should adopt a common stand on climate
change.
Let’s Do It!

Direction: With the same group( according to the color of their

name tags, each group will the following:
Green – Create a POSTER/DRAWING highlighting the effects of
climate change in the Philippines.
Yellow – ROLE-PLAY a scenario highlighting at least 1 cause of
the energy crisis.
Blue - Create a short RAP or SONG on how can we minimize our
contribution to climate change.
Black – Create a catchy POEM on how to achieve sustainable
energy.
Let’s Do It!

After 10 minutes, finished or not finished, each group will

present their work and will be graded based on the rubrics
provided.
