1.1. HOW TO USE THIS LEARNING GUIDE?

This guide provides information on the content and practical arrangements of the course.
Please study it carefully. The other primary source of information is the U-link web page
associated with the course. It is your duty to make sure that you have access to U-link
page and login to it on a regular basis.

NB: It will be assumed that all students are aware of all course related matters as
announced on the U-link course website. It is therefore of cardinal importance that you
visit the site regularly.

3.2. NQF CREDITS: 7.5

3.3. TYPE OF MODULE: Semester course (presented in the second semester)

3.4. DURATION OF MODULE IN WEEKS: 14

3.5. LANGUAGE OF DELIVERY: English

4. PURPOSE OF THE MODULE

The primary purpose of this module as an integral part of the Engineering is to:
o Provide the students with a well-rounded and broad education that equips them with the
mathematical knowledge base, theory and methodology of disciplines that could serve as a
basis for entry into the mathematically orientated labor market, professional training and
practice and postgraduate studies.
o Enable the students to demonstrate initiative and responsibility in engineering

5. PREREQUISITES

MAT0AA2/MATEAA2, ASME2A2, MAT2A20, ASMA2A2

6. MODULE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

On completion of this learning event, the student should be able to:

 Utilize the basic theoretical concepts underlying Linear Algebra.
 Utilize the concepts of orthogonality.
 Apply concepts on vector spaces and subspaces.
 Determine eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a given matrix.
 Utilize the theory of linear transformations.
 Utilize the theory of inner product spaces.
 Apply the theory of vector spaces and inner product spaces to solve related
problems.

7. ASSESSMENT

The assessment opportunities for MATEAB2 will consists of two semester tests, two class tests
and two to four online quizzes. The semester tests and class tests will be conducted in person on
campus. The online assessment platform, WeBWork, will be used to conduct online quizzes.
ALL assessments will contribute towards the semester mark.

Schedule of semester tests:

Semester test 1 Saturday, 19 August 2023 Time and venue to be confirmed.
Semester test 2 Monday, 2 October 2023 Time and venue to be confirmed.

Schedule of class tests:

Class test 1 Friday, 1 September 2023 Groups 1 and 2:
08:50 – 09:35, DL105 and CL 201
Class test 2 Wednesday, 11 October 2023 Group 1: 09:40 – 10:25, DL 201
Group 2: 13:00 – 13:45, CL 201

WeBWorK:
The link to the 2023 MATEAB2 WeBWorK platform will be posted on BlackBoard in the last
week of July. The first online quiz will only be posted in August. Your username is your student
number and to start with your password is also your student number. You should change your
password when you log in for the first time.

7.1 DEFERRED TEST

If a student cannot write any semester test due to illness or other legitimate reason, (s)he will
have the chance to write a deferred test. Every student admitted to the deferred test shall write a
test covering the scope of the test (s)he has missed. A student can only obtain permission to
write the deferred test by (a) providing a medical certificate for the particular test date; and (b)
completing a deferred test application form which will be made available on U-link. This
documentation must be presented within one week of the missed semester test. A busy test
schedule is not an excuse for missing a semester test. The deferred test is not a
supplementary test for students who fail a semester test. No exceptions will be made to these
rules.

Schedule of sick tests:

Sick test 1 Friday, 1 September 2023 Time and venue to be confirmed.
Sick test 2 Saturday, 14 October 2023 Time and venue to be confirmed.
There will be no deferred (sick) tests for class tests. If you have a valid excuse (please see
above) for missing a class test, your semester mark will be computed without using the missed
class test mark.

7.2 PASS REQUIREMENTS

Composition of semester mark Semester tests: 40 – 50% each

(approximate) (combined 80 – 100%)
Average of the class tests and WeBWork
assignments: 0% – 20%
(Subject to change)
Composition of final mark Semester mark: 50%
Exam mark: 50%
Pass requirements A final mark of at least 50% and an exam mark of no
less than 40% is required to pass the module.

8. SUPPORT RESOURCES

8.1. TEXTBOOKS
8.1.1. Prescribed book

is very important that you do these questions and stay up to date. Contact session will then be
used to conduct in-class tutorials during which the solutions to these and other problems will be
covered.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

TIMETABLE:
Any clashes in your timetable must be brought to the attention of your lecturer within the first
two weeks of the semester. Pay special attention to the schedule of the semester tests.
(Please take note that there is only a clash with semester test if they are scheduled for the
same time on the same date – not merely on the same day.)

MARKED TESTS:
Keep your tests in a safe place should there be any dispute regarding your semester marks.
Please note that you have 7 working days, from the release of a semester test, to query
the marking or adding of a script. No late queries will be considered.

SUPPLEMENTARY EXAM:
You are not automatically allowed to write a supplementary exam. The exam committee of the
Faculty where you are registered carefully analyses the results of each student when deciding
who is allowed to write the supplementary exam.
