1. (a) Let ||.|| : R2 → [0, ∞} be defined as ||x|| = |x1 | + |x2 | + |x1 − x2 |.


Prove that ||.|| defined above is a norm on R2 . [30 Marks]
(b) Using the norm defined in 1(a) above , find a positive number r, such that
Br ((2, 1)) ⊆ B3 ((1, 1)). [10 Marks]
(c) Using the norm defined in 1(a) above, find a positive number s, such that
Bs ((2, 1)) ∩ B3 ((3, 1)) 6= ∅. [10 Marks ]

2. Let S1 = 2 and Sn+1 = 2 + Sn , for n = 1, 2, 3, ....
(i) Show that {Sn } is a monotonically increasing sequence. (Hint: Use induction.) [20 Marks]
(ii) Show tht Sn ≤ 2, ∀n ∈ N. (Hint: use induction) [15 Marks]
(iii) Does the sequence converge? Compute the limit. [15 Marks]

3. Let {xn } be a sequence of real numbers. Assume that the “even” and “odd” subsequences {x2n }
and {x2n+1 } respectively are convergent. Denote by L = lim x2n and M = lim x2n+1 .
