TEST 1/ 2ND SEMESTER 25/04/2024

The History of Football
Football has been around in some form for many centuries. However, it was often very different in past times.
There were many different types of football in each region. In 1863, the Football Association, the FA, was
founded in England. It (1) got together football players from around the country and discussed the various
rules of football. That year, the FA published the rules of football and this marks the start of football as a
properly organised sport.

Workers began to play football according to the new FA rules in their (2) free time. The famous teams often
grew out of teams made up of men who worked in a particular place. Manchester City Football Club was for
railway workers. Arsenal F C was for those who worked at the Royal Arsenal making guns for the army. When
football became very popular and people paid money to watch, the clubs changed the rule and allowed anyone
to play. Nonetheless, they just wanted excellent players.

Football became a professional sport and spread around the world. The first international match ever was
between Scotland and England in 1870. International matches became more common after 1900. In 1930, the first
football world cup was held in Uruguay. England refused to participate because they thought it would distract
from club matches and club football was more important than international football.
