2 Situation
You have heard some co-workers at your company discussing different working hours
and you are interested in finding out more. In a business magazine you find an article
called ‘Is flexible working for you?’.
Task
Read the article entitled ‘Is flexible working for you?’ and decide whether the
following statements are TRUE or FALSE. Then write only the words or phrases from
the passage that support your answer. Do not write more than six support words
for each answer. You will lose marks if you write more.
Note: Answers are usually in two parts. You may need to look in different parts of the
passage to find the support words you need.

Is flexible working for you?

Are you a morning person? An evening person? Are you a working parent? Do you have a
busy rush hour commute?
If you answered yes to any of the questions above, you may have already thought about
changing your working day. Indeed, people are having conversations about this in many
countries around the world.
Instead of being at work during the normal working day, with flexible working you can
change the hours you work. This doesn’t mean that you can just arrive and leave whenever
you want to; you must agree it first and you cannot do something different every day.
Some people ask for flexible working to spend more time with their family. If employees
have young children, they often want to be able to take them to nursery or school, and
watch them in performances. From an employer’s point of view, a happy parent often
makes a happy employee! A recent survey of parents by Century magazine showed that
working parents were more likely to enjoy their jobs if their employer was ‘family-friendly’.
But it is not only families that benefit from flexible working. Some international companies
such as Google or American Express are very well known for wanting all their employees
to have a good work life and a good home life. The most important thing is honesty. If
an employee can work from home and is honest with the company (and the company is
honest with the employee) then work will get done, and both will be happy.
However, there are other reasons for flexible working. Have you ever travelled to work
a little later than your normal time? If so, you know how quiet the roads and trains are!
Imagine if you could travel before or after the busy times. It would make travelling easier,
wouldn’t it?
In some countries you can ask your employer for flexible working. What are you waiting for?

4 Situation
Your company would like to change its supplier for IT equipment and mobile phones.
You have asked your colleague to find information about different suppliers and what
they can offer.
Task
Your colleague has emailed you some details about new equipment and suppliers.
Using the information in the email below, complete the ‘IT AND MOBILE PHONE
SUPPLIERS’ tables opposite.

Hi Dina
I’ve spoken to several different suppliers and here’s the information they have given
me.
I talked first to A1 Equipment and they can supply computers and printers. Printers
cost £50 each and computers are £255. Unfortunately, A1 do not offer a helpline
so we would need to find another company to help us if we have any problems.
TopComp are £10 more expensive than A1 for printers and £100 more for computers
but they have a big advantage as they have a free customer support number.
Finally, Office Supplies has an excellent range of £250 computers (and for every
computer we buy they give us a tablet!). They have stopped selling printers and have
recommended that we buy printers from A1. Their product support is very good
value too; it’s just £520 for the whole company.
Nobody supplies both IT equipment and mobile phones. Looking at mobile phones,
there are only three possible options, priced at £620, £650 and £750 per year for each
phone. Each price includes all calls and messages, and the phone itself. National Tel
are the cheapest, followed by WorldCom. The contract with C21 looks expensive but
it’s only for 18 months (WorldCom’s is 2 years) and we could keep our numbers. If we
used the cheapest company, we would have to change our numbers and this would
mean many problems for our own customers.
I think we should decide exactly what we need! Some of these suppliers are offering
some very good deals, especially TopComp and C21, and if they have what we want I
think we’ll be very pleased with their service.
Please tell me what you would like me to do next.
Kind regards
A colleague
