SDG 11:

Sustainable Cities and

Communities

Imagine a world where our cities are not just concrete but thriving
ecosystems of innovation,
where every street tells a story of sustainable living

If yes, we share the same story.

Did you know that?

Our group name, DILAAB, isn't just a catchy acronym—it's a
powerful statement!

Developing Inclusive, Livable, and Accessible Areas with

Betterment

In a nutshell, SDG 11 is the United Nations' vision for

transforming cities into inclusive, resilient, and sustainable
spaces. It's about creating urban environments where
everyone thrives, with access to quality housing,
transportation, and green spaces.

In essence, SDG 11 aims to make our cities not just places to live
but communities that embody progress and well-being for
all.
Oh my god! I am worried about the facts and figures relating to
SDG 11.

Approximately 1.1 billion people currently live in slums or slum-

like conditions in cities, with 2 billion more expected in the next
30 years.

Over half the global population lives in urban areas,

expected to rise to 70% by 2050.
Approximately 1.1 billion people live in slums, with an
additional 2 billion expected in the next 30 years.
In 2022, only half of the world's urban population had
easy access to public transportation.
Since 2015, the number of countries with disaster risk
reduction strategies has doubled.
SDG Goal 11 requires inclusive, resilient, and sustainable
urban development policies for basic services,
affordable housing, efficient transportation, and green
spaces.
85% of slum dwellers are concentrated in Central and Southern Asia, Eastern and
South-Eastern Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa.
Global cities expanded physically faster than population growth rates, accounting for
half of humanity living in cities today.
Cities, occupying 3% of Earth's land, contribute to 60-80% of energy consumption and
75% of carbon emissions.
Rapid urbanization strains water supplies, sewage systems, living environments, and
public health.
Cities generate 70% of human-induced greenhouse gas emissions.
The cost of air pollution health damages is estimated at US $1 billion in certain cities.
Coastal cities face growing vulnerability to climate-related disasters.
Over the next 30 years, 90% of urban growth is expected in Asia and Africa.
By 2050, 70% of the world's population is predicted to live in urban settlements.

Should I be worried about this situation?

Yes, there is a valid concern regarding the challenges highlighted in SDG 11. Worrying
alone isn't the solution, but acknowledging and addressing these challenges
collectively is essential for creating a better and more sustainable urban future.
Yay, excited about SDG 11—it's
a clear roadmap with goals
and targets!
