This learning material aims to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:
As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.
Posttest - This measure how much you have learned from the
entire module.
EXPECTATION
PRETEST
Refer to the table below. Encircle the letter that you think is the best answer.
After taking and checking this short test, take note of the items that you were not
able to answer correctly and look for the right answer as you go through this module.
Complete the table and calculate the lower quartile and the upper quartile of
the Mathematics test scores of 40 students. Complete what is being asked below.

LESSON
In this self-learning module lesson, we will find a detailed overview into what
deciles are, the step by step process of finding the decile of grouped data are included
in this module. Enough examples and exercises are given to facilitate learning.
Deciles are those values that divide the total frequency into 10 equal parts.
There are 9 deciles which are denoted by D 1, D2, … D9. The kth decile denoted by Dk
is computed as follows:
𝑘𝑁
− 𝑐𝑓𝑏
𝐷𝑘 = 𝐿𝐵 + ( 10 )𝑖
𝑓𝐷𝑘
Example 1: Sam collects plastic bottles every month from the 50 houses in his
barangay. The data for the collection last month is summarized in the table below.
Find D7 and interpret the result
7(50) 350
𝐷7 = = = 35th
10 10
This means we need to find the class interval where the 35 th weigh is
contained. Note that the 24th – 35th weighs belong to the class interval: 12-14. So,
the 35th weigh is also within the class interval.
Step 3: Set the given facts for the identified Decile Class.
LB = 11.5
N = 50
cfb = 23
𝑓𝐷7 = 12
i =3
7𝑁
= 35
10
Step 4: Set the formula for D7, substitute and evaluate. Write the final answer and
put the analysis.
7𝑁
− 𝑐𝑓𝑏
𝐷7 = 𝐿𝐵 + ( 10 )𝑖
𝑓𝐷7
35 − 23
𝐷7 = 11.5 + ( )3 Since 7th decile is equivalent to the
12 70th percentile. Therefore, 70% of the
= 11.5 + (1)(3) houses gave less than or equal to14.5
= 14.5 kg of plastic bottles to Sam.
Example 2: Calculate the 2nd decile and 8th decile of the Mathematics test scores of
50 students.
Scores Frequency
46-50 4
41-45 8
36-40 11
31-35 9
26-30 12
21-25 6
Solution
Step 1: Complete the table by adding a column for less than cumulative frequency.
LB = 25.5
N = 50
cfb = 6
𝑓𝐷2 = 12
i =5
2𝑁
= 10
10
Step 4: Set the formula for D2, substitute and evaluate. Write the final answer and
put the analysis.
2𝑁
− 𝑐𝑓𝑏
𝐷2 = 𝐿𝐵 + ( 10 )𝑖
𝑓𝐷2
8𝑁
Position of 𝐷8 = LB = 40.5
10
N = 50
8(50)
= cfb = 38
10
𝑓𝐷8 = 8
= 40th i =5
8𝑁
This mean we need to find the = 40
10
class interval where the 40th score is
contained. 8𝑁
− 𝑐𝑓𝑏
𝐷8 = 𝐿𝐵 + ( 10 )𝑖
Note that the 39th-46th scores 𝑓𝐷2
belong to the class interval: 41-45.
So, the 40th score is also within the 40 − 38
class interval. 𝐷8 = 40.5 + ( )5
8
The D8 class is the class
𝐷8 = 41.75
interval 41-45.
Therefore, 80% of the students got a score less than or equal to 41.75.
