Literary Analysis and Critical Interpretation on Carlos P. Romulo’s I am a Filipino

The literary piece I Am a Filipino is written by the national hero, Carlos P. Romulo.

Romulo, at the beginning of his life, was already a big fan of writing. He started reporting when

he was 16 years old and a publisher at 32. He was the only Filipino who won Pulitzer Prize in

journalism. He wrote 18 books and a range of literary works. The late Carlos P. Romulo

published the I am a Filipino on December 15, 1941, this was during the Japanese invasion of

the Philippines. This piece made its way to the Americans during World War 2 before being

banned upon entry into the country.

I am a Filipino is an essay written to express the desire for independence from foreign

invaders. As written in the first sentence of the essay “glorious past”, the writer expressed how

triumphant Filipinos were after years of fighting against oppressors. When the Japanese

invaded the Philippines, Carlos P. Romulo encouraged Filipinos to value freedom and embrace

being Filipino. Even the title speaks for the purpose of the essay. Saying “I am a Filipino” is also

expressing one’s endless loyalty, commitment, and love to one’s nation. This iconic literary

piece has been considered a manifesto for a lot of patriots. In fact, it has been used by students

during elocution competitions for its words speak truth and sincerity.

The writer also used some effective literary devices to beautifully and strongly express a

message. The use of visual and auditory imagery is evident in the phrases “brown-skinned

men”, and “whistling wind”. The author also uses a metaphor comparing a seed to a Filipino’s

love for his country. In the sentence, “in my blood runs the immortal seed of heroes- seed that

flowered down the centuries in deeds of courage and defiance”, it implies that like a seed you

plant, and water, one’s love of country also grows through time. And as the author spoke about
how immortal the seed is, it sends a message that one’s love for the country should and not

must also cease.

We strongly agree that Carlos P. Romulo’s piece deserves the recognition it has now for

it evidently shows the author’s undying love for the country. To add, it only does not stop in

expressing, it also encourages and ignites most especially the generation Z to love the country.

As a youth of today, reading and understanding this literary piece reminds us that now more

than ever, we should value independence and freedom. We should not only care but do our part

in helping our country succeed. Lastly, it tells us to be engaged and well-informed on what is

truly happening around us as Filipinos. After all, triumph is a triumph when the people are the

real victors.
