The literary piece I Am a Filipino is written by the national hero, Carlos P. Romulo.
Romulo, at the beginning of his life, was already a big fan of writing. He started reporting when
he was 16 years old and a publisher at 32. He was the only Filipino who won Pulitzer Prize in
journalism. He wrote 18 books and a range of literary works. The late Carlos P. Romulo
published the I am a Filipino on December 15, 1941, this was during the Japanese invasion of
the Philippines. This piece made its way to the Americans during World War 2 before being
I am a Filipino is an essay written to express the desire for independence from foreign
invaders. As written in the first sentence of the essay “glorious past”, the writer expressed how
triumphant Filipinos were after years of fighting against oppressors. When the Japanese
invaded the Philippines, Carlos P. Romulo encouraged Filipinos to value freedom and embrace
being Filipino. Even the title speaks for the purpose of the essay. Saying “I am a Filipino” is also
expressing one’s endless loyalty, commitment, and love to one’s nation. This iconic literary
piece has been considered a manifesto for a lot of patriots. In fact, it has been used by students
during elocution competitions for its words speak truth and sincerity.
The writer also used some effective literary devices to beautifully and strongly express a
message. The use of visual and auditory imagery is evident in the phrases “brown-skinned
men”, and “whistling wind”. The author also uses a metaphor comparing a seed to a Filipino’s
love for his country. In the sentence, “in my blood runs the immortal seed of heroes- seed that
flowered down the centuries in deeds of courage and defiance”, it implies that like a seed you
plant, and water, one’s love of country also grows through time. And as the author spoke about
how immortal the seed is, it sends a message that one’s love for the country should and not
We strongly agree that Carlos P. Romulo’s piece deserves the recognition it has now for
it evidently shows the author’s undying love for the country. To add, it only does not stop in
expressing, it also encourages and ignites most especially the generation Z to love the country.
As a youth of today, reading and understanding this literary piece reminds us that now more
than ever, we should value independence and freedom. We should not only care but do our part
in helping our country succeed. Lastly, it tells us to be engaged and well-informed on what is
truly happening around us as Filipinos. After all, triumph is a triumph when the people are the
real victors.
