d66 Hooks and Rumours for

the Forbidden Lands

INTRODUCTION: This is a list of hooks and rumours that characters

could hear whilst asking around in various places, whether they are looking
for specific information or just general rumours. The rumours may or may
not be true, which is up to the GameMaster, and they can be used to add
colour to the setting or as potential adventure hooks.

D66 RUMOUR
11 Abyss Worms are a subterranean predator that comes to the surface to attack
people and, in the case of larger ones, swallow them whole. Younger worms can
be successfully lured up and killed, but larger worms, which can grow up to 12
metres long, are more difficult to eradicate. It’s rumoured, however, that some
badly affected areas are having more difficulty luring and killing younger Abyss
Worms than they used to, as if the worms themselves have become wise to the
methods.
12 Animals, though they can sometimes be a threat, are not normally one to the
same extent that monsters can be. They can kill someone, but rarely seek out
people in order to do so. There are tumours, though, that deep in some of the
forests, animals are far more aggressive. That instead of only fighting to defend
themselves, or occasionally when starving, they are deliberately seeking out par-
ties of intruders and working together to kill them.
13 Arina Forest is home to many orcs, with some clans being primarily resident
under its boughs. There are rumours that some of the more distant settlements,
especially those close to the high ground in the centre of the forest, have been
attacked recently by unknown forces. Some claim that the attackers are elves,
others that they were monsters. Some believe that there were monsters sent by
elves. However, no-one appears to have survived an encounter to tell the truth of
what actually happened.
14 Artefacts are rare and powerful items that are always in great demand, yet very
hard to find. They are prized by those that recover them, and few are ever sold.
There’s a rumour that the Rust Brothers are actively seeking out anyone reputed
to have an artefact and acquiring said artefact from them, more often than not
through the use of fatal force. It isn’t known why the Rust Brothers have suddenly
increased their pursuit of artefacts.
15 Aslene nowadays is a desolated wasteland called the Ashen Vale, but there are
rumours that problems are still emerging from the wasteland. Some of those who
live close to the region have claimed to have seen an increase in dangerous, and
sometimes warped, creatures emerging from the Ashen Vale to attack anyone
they encounter.

D66 RUMOUR
16 Badalar the Butcher, the leader of the Reapenters, has reportedly not been seen
for some time. Some suggest, or perhaps hope, that he might have died or been
killed, but the organisation doesn’t seem to have undergone any of the turmoil
that might be expected in such a situation. Others say there’s a rumour that the
Butcher has taken a number of his most loyal followers in search of something,
perhaps an artefact.
21 Belderand, first homeland of the dwarves, has, thanks to King Turik, largely
managed to keep out of the various wars that have hit the region, though some
dwarves think this has allowed humans and orcs to take control of the Forbidden
Lands. Turik is growing old and has four children with rather different dispositions.
There’s a rumour that the king’s health has started to rapidly decline, and that a
degree of infighting has started within the city, as different factions amongst the
dwarves seek to place their own preferred child of the king on the throne.
22 Demons have reputedly been seen in greater numbers than at any time since
the Demon Flood in some of the outlying regions, though verified sightings have
proven hard to get. Either the sightings are not true, or most of those witnessing
them have failed to survive the experience. There’s a worry that someone may
have opened a portal to the demon realm again and that the lands might be about
to experience a new flood of the monsters.
23 Drakewyrms are known to charge into the sky whenever a rainbow is seen, so that
they can be the first to meet Tincturus, their god and ancestor who the creatures
believe to be the rainbow. Rainbows have recently started occurring much more
frequently in some places, and at times when they would not be expected. This is
drawing drakewyrms to those places and the monsters can cause a lot of damage
to any region they are in. It almost seems as if the drakewyrms are being deliber-
ately pointed at some locations.
24 Emperor Hroka the First and the Greatest, the ruler of the Urhur clan of orcs, pre-
sented his wife, Soria, with the elven ruby Iridne to commemorate their wedding.
There’s a rumour that there have been a number of attempts to steal Iridne from
Soria, and that possibly the latest one may have actually succeeded. Hroka would
probably be interested in stopping any such attempts and recovering Iridne, if it
has been stolen.

D66 RUMOUR
25 Explorers of a ruin in the region of Harga are reputed to have stumbled across a
ruin in which several Death Knights were slumbering. A single Death Knight is a
menace; a group of them acting together is a force for massive destruction. No-
one seems clear where this ruin might be and, if any of the explorers survived the
encounter, they are not talking, probably because they do not want to be blamed
for anything that happens as a result.
26 Father Geno is a notorious priest who sympathises with the Reapenters, preaching
against elves and at rituals of the cult. There are rumours, though, that Geno has
not directly conducted any rituals in some time, nor has he been seen in public.
Some suggest that perhaps the father has died, perhaps by assassination. Others,
however, think it’s more likely that Geno is instead secretly plotting somewhere
and will soon reappear.
31 31 Ferrale Teramalda was baked alive inside her stolen dwarven ceremonial ar-
mour on the orders of the dwarven lord Garmar Four-Beard after she was cap-
tured. The armour, perhaps through divine intervention, climbed out of the coals
and killed Garmar and his bodyguards and since then the armour has wandered
the Ravenland. The armour has reputedly been seen near the mountains to the
north on a number of occasions recently, and those who claim to have seen it also
claim that it is not wandering aimlessly, but seemingly searching with purpose for
something unknown.
32 Few dragons in the Forbidden Lands are that large, even though they are certainly
large enough to pose a threat to anyone unlucky enough to encounter one, and
are not that intelligent either. Legend speaks of more dangerous, more intelligent
and smarter dragons, though such are not seen. However, there have been ru-
mours of attacks on settlements near to the northern mountains and the Dank-
wood, attacks that seem somewhat draconic, but significantly more deadly.
33 Giants, according to legend, were mostly cleared out of the Forbidden Lands by
the Nightwalker at the request of the Raven God. Pockets of giants are still said to
live in some of the mountain valleys, and an encounter with a giant can devastate
an entire village. There are rumours that a leader is arising amongst the giants,
one skilled in sorcery who plans to unite the giants to drive the other kin out of
the lands the giants once ruled.

D66 RUMOUR
34 It is the belief of many that the current orcs are descended from a kin that was
enslaved by the dwarves and elves when the land was divided. Dwarves and elves
claim that orcs were created to serve and that is a role in which they should re-
main. There’s a rumour, though, that explorers recently uncovered something that
suggests that the ancestors of the orcs were enslaved by elves and dwarves, and
that prior to this enslavement, they had a notable civilisation, albeit one that could
not withstand the dwarves and elves.
35 Lake Varda is used as a source of fresh fish by some of those that live on its
shores, but recently fishing has become a lot chancier. It’s rumoured that more
than a few fishing boats have been attacked by monsters from beneath the water
and as a result been lost with all hands. These rumours have resulted in many
refusing to go out on the lake, instead attempting to fish from the lakeshore, but
this has had the effect of reducing the amount of fish caught, especially as the
waters by the shore are fished out.
36 Martea, the elven spouse of Zygofer, eventually fled from Alderland and her
husband with their son, Zertorme, arriving at the dwarven mine of Lumra. When
Zygofer arrived at Lumra Mines with an army, he found them empty except for
a demonic creature, and the fate of his wife and son was unknown. There are
rumours, though, that Martea escaped from Lumra before it was invaded by the
creature, and that she and her son have been seen since in a number of locations,
apparently seeking for something.
41 Minotaurs are strong and hardy creatures, that seem to enjoy violence and, when
not travelling in small groups or alone, ravaging the countryside, are sometimes
hired as brute muscle by criminal groups. The sole thing that prevents Minotaurs
from being an even greater threat is their low intelligence. However, there’s a ru-
mour of a substantially more intelligent Minotaur that has been gathering more of
their kind together and banding them together into a semi-disciplined force.
42 Most restless dead are rarely aggressive, instead being confused and in need of
soothing. The living often do sooth the dead, but there are rumours that previ-
ously unaggressive restless dead have started behaving in an oddly more aggres-
sive fashion. Rust Brothers often take restless dead away, to use as servants and
worse, and some wonder if they are behind this recent rise in aggression, seeking
to turn more of the dead into useful soldiers.

43 Ogres can be dangerous beings, and their love of freedom is well known. They can
cause a lot of destruction if angered, or sometimes just because it amuses them,
but no-one has ever been able to bend ogres to their will. There is a rumour,
however, of a large group of ogres in service to a powerful being, something that
is unusual, given their love of personal freedom, and concerning, given how much
damage an organised group of ogres could do.
44 Rust Lord Kartorda is the current leader of the Rust Brothers but there’s a ru-
mour that he’s died and no-one outside the top priesthood of the church knows
this. Many high-ranking priests bear deformities, and some hide their faces. It’s
claimed that Kartorda hides his face to conceal the fact that the original Kartorda
has been replaced by another one of the priests.
45 Somewhere in the Ravenland is said to be a hidden village called Koracia, a shrine
that honours the Raven god. The location of Koracia isn’t known, but the Rust
Brothers would dearly love to know its location so that it could be razed to the
ground. There’s a rumour that the Rust Brothers are getting closer to discovering
Koracia’s location, something which the Raven Sisters can’t permit to happen.
46 Strange, pale creatures bearing a similarity to dwarves, whom the dwarves them-
selves call dwelvers or the elder ones, are sometimes seen near the mouths of
the deeper caves, though they rarely spend long in the sunlight. Recently, though,
there are rumours that dwelvers have been seen in increasing numbers on the
surface, and that they have been staying longer, despite apparent discomfort. It’s
wondered if something is forcing the dwelvers up from their subterranean homes.
51 Strangling Vines are a plant that is more than just a nuisance, for the things can
be quite dangerous to those that fall afoul of them. They usually hide amongst
other greenery and present a harmless appearance until they strike. It’s ru-
moured, though, that in some of the more distant settlements that the plants
have started becoming much more aggressive, actively taking over farmland and
killing the farmers and their livestock.
52 The Blood Mists dissipated over several years, finally making it possible to safely
travel through the Forbidden Lands. There are rumours, though, that pockets of
the Mist still linger in some of the more outlying regions, especially areas such as
mountain valleys that are little visited. Some say that these pockets are starting
to spread and if some way isn’t found of preventing it, eventually the Mist will
smother the lands again.

D66 RUMOUR
53 The clans of the dwarves frequently squabble amongst each other about which
clan is the most able to perform the great work assigned to the dwarves by the
god Huge and where they will be seated at the god’s table in the next world. Usu-
ally, this squabbling is more of a rivalry between skilled craftspeople more than
anything else, but there are rumours that a number of the recent squabbles have
turned violent.
54 The Galdane clan fled Aslene when it was ravaged by the demonic hordes sent
by Zygofer. The Galdanes are the traditional enemies of the Quards whilst both
lived in Aslene, though they have since been forced to put their enmities aside,
even if such are still sung about. Recently, it seems that songs and stories about
the Quards are being sung and told much more frequently and there have been
rumours of a number of clashes between the two clans. The general impression
given is that the Galdanes are not going to put their old quarrels aside for much
longer.
55 The Golden Bough is the largest order of druids in the Forbidden Lands and many
members of the order are Elvenspring, half-elves who have chosen to live by elven
customs. The order destroys things that are inimical to nature and allow life to
continue as it should, but there’s a rumour that a splinter faction inside the Golden
Bough have decided that most sentient species are inimical to nature and should
therefore be destroyed.
56 The Iron Lock bars the way into Alderland and is guarded by The Silent, who never
speak or interact with those of Ravenland other than to kill them if they get too
close. Despite this, there’s a rumour that someone has found a way past the Iron
Lock into Alderland, and that there is a quiet trade between the two regions. It
seems unlikely that The Silent will have been bribed in any way, so it’s assumed
that such a path doesn’t involve them.
61 The Reapenters, the doomsday cult that sprang out of the Raven Church, has
reputedly become even more active of recent. The Reapenters are known to
slaughter entire villages when they can, and it’s said that they are now looking
at purging entire towns from the inside, infiltrating their members into the set-
tlements then destroying them through a combination of turning the inhabitants
against each other and slaughtering them themselves.

D66 RUMOUR
62 The villages on the plains of Harga, before the plains were laid waste, underwent
what the Rust Church called the Cleansing, where any Raven Sisters found in the
region were killed. There’s a rumour that some of the Raven Church feel that the
rest of the lands should be subjected to such a Cleansing again, an organised
affair, not the piecemeal killing of any Raven Sisters stumbled across.
63 The Vond Wall was built, along with the fortress Vond, in Shadowgate Pass by the
dwarves in order to stop migrations of any more humans from Aslene. Only ruins
of the Wall and Vond itself now stand, but there’s a rumour that underneath the
ruins are vast underground workings of the dwarves, separate from any of their
other cities, and that within these workings there are still artefacts to be found
from when the Wall was still intact.
64 There’s a rumour that a number of ents, the living trees that grow around elven
rubies, have been attacked and destroyed recently. Ents can be very dangerous if
provoked, and that sort of thing would provoke them, yet the ents attacked have
apparently fallen without a fight, something that would greatly concern other ents,
and elves, should it prove to be true. It could be that someone is hunting elven
rubies, though harvesting them from ents does not seem like the safest method.
65 Whiners, the small humanoids hunted by orcs and humans for their flesh, are re-
putedly starting to band together to stop the depredations being inflicted on their
kind. Though they are individually not very powerful, if enough of them attack at
once, they can inflict a lot of damage, and there are rumours of bands of up to a
hundred whiners laying traps for small groups of humans and orcs and slaughter-
ing them.
66 Zygofer opened a nexus years ago that allowed hordes of uncontrolled demons to
pass through, laying waste to the land in the Demon Flood. Zygofer and Merigall
eventually sealed the nexus, which weakened the demons already in the land,
though not before much was destroyed. There’s a rumour that the nexus’s seal
is no longer as strong as it used to be, and if it starts to weaken again, more de-
mons could pass through it in a second Flood.
