A LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE IV
Writer: Joylene V. Cagasan
School: Gingoog Christian Colleges

Content Standards: The learners demonstrate understanding of components of

weather using simple instruments.

Performance Standards: The learners should be able to practice precautionary

measures in planning activities.

Learning Competency and Code: make simple interpretations about the weather as
recorded in the weather chart; S4ES-IVf-7
Quarter: 4 Week: 6 Day: 7

I. OBJECTIVE:

At the end of 50-minutes 75% of the pupils should be able to observe changes

in wind speed and direction.

II. CONTENT:

SUBJECT MATTER: EARTH AND SPACE

Subject Integration:
ESP: Self Confidence and Teamwork
English: Speaking/Reporting
Strategies: 7Es learning model, cooperative learning, reporting

ELICIT (5 minutes ) MATERIALS

Review:

Before I proceed to the next topic I will do some recap

about the previous lesson about Observing changes in Air
Temperature, so that my pupils would still familiarize the
topic that I’ve discussed before I proceed to the new one.

Ask the students:

1. What is temperature?

2. How is air temperature measured?

ENGAGE (10 minutes )

Motivation: READ AND ASK

The class will be divided into 5 groups Charts

I will post a question and pictures on the board Printed pictures
All you have to do is to collaborate with your group
on answering the question.
After that, choose a leader to report your answer in
front.
Give them 10 minutes to do it.

GROUP QUESTION

1. What is wind?

2. What is wind
speed?

3. What is wind
direction?
4. What instrument is
used to measure
wind speed?

5. What instrument is
used to determine
wind direction?

ACTIVITY A
Do the following :
1. Measure and cut the cardboard (6 ½ inches and 1
½ inches) to form two rods. Fasten the two rods
at the center using a push pin.
2. Staple the paper cups on each end of the four
rods. Make sure that one cup has a different color
from the rest of tea cups.
3. Pin the rods to the pencil top eraser. Mount the
pencil onto the modeling clay. The clay will serve
as the base of your improvised anemometer.
4. Set up your improvised anemometer outside the
classroom or outside your bedroom’s window.
5. Count the number of rotations the instrument
makes for two minutes while the wind blow. How
many rations did it make?

GROUP 2 Wind Vane

Let’s Improvised wind vane to know the wind
You need:

 Straw
 Straight pin
ACTIVITY B
Do the following:  Index card
1. Trace the point and tail of an arrow on an index  Pencil with
card. Cut out point and tail and tape them on the eraser
ends of the straw.  Tape
2. Attach the middle part of the straw to the pencil
top eraser using a push pin. Make sure the straw
can turn freely.
3. Set up your improvised wind vane outside the
classroom or outside your bedroom’s window.
From the wind vane’s present position, mark the
four primary directions: N for North, S for South, E
for East and W for West.
4. Observe the direction where the arrow point to.

EXPLAIN (5 minutes)

Give further explanation about the activity we did earlier

In activity A, you made an improvised anemometer.
The anemometer tells how fast the wind is blowing. This
kind of rotating anemometer (whirling cups) is the most
common. Wind speed is determined by the number of
turns of the wheel at a certain length of time. The cups
move slowly when the wind is gentle. They move faster
when the wind is gentle. They move faster when the wind
is strong.

Does wind speed always change? Wind speed

varies throughout the day. When wind speed is extremely
high, a typhoon, hurricane, or tornado may occur.

In activity B, you made an improvised wind vane. The

wind vane is a weather instrument that is used to show the
direction where the wind is blowing.
Like wind speed, wind direction changes throughout
the day. Both influence the weather.

GENERALIZATION: (Ask Question)
 Does wind speed and direction always change? How
and why?
APPLICATION: (REPORTING)
 In same group at the beginning, I will give a
question and all you have to do is to collaborate
with your group on answering the question.
 I will give 5 minutes each group to answer each
question.
 After that, choose a leader to report your answer.

GROUP QUESTIONS:
I.Is wind speed refers to how fast the wind moves?
II.Is it true that wind refers to air movement?
III.How wind vane used to show the wind direction?
IV. Is wind speed and direction influence the weather?
V. What instrument that we need to use to know how
fast the wind moves?

ASSESSMENT

A. Write T on blank space if the statement is true. If it

is false, change the underlined word or phrase to
make the statement true.

weather condition for the day.

__________2. An anemometer is used to tell the direction

Where the wind is blowing.

__________3. Light to moderate wind indicates a fair

weather.

__________4. Wind speed and direction cannot be

measured or determined.

__________5. The wind direction varies throughout the

day.
