1. (a)i. state the distribution law. (01Marks)


ii. Elaborate four limitations of distribution law.(04marks)
(b) i. Explain why ethoxyethane is particularly suitable for the extraction of an organic compound
from the aqueous solution. (02marks)

ii. Calculate the mass of organic compound A that can be extracted from 100cm3 of an aqueous
solution containing 5.0g of A by shaking with:
 100cm3 of ethoxyethane in one portion.(3Marks)
 Two successive 50cm3 portions of ethoxyethane (4Marks)
 Comment on the results obtained in (a) and (b) above.(02marks)
(Partition coefficient of A between ethoxyethane and water =3.0)
(c) i. State the Le-Chatelier’s principle. (01Mark)
ii. For the reaction

2. (a) Mercury (II) chloride, HgCl2, reacts with oxalate ions, C2O4-2, in solution with the precipitation
Of HgCl2.

Initiates at 373K for solutions of concentration shown and expressed as moldm-3of HgCl2 reacted are

(b) Sketch curves of reactant concentration against time for the decomposition of gas A to show the
relative rates for both first and second order decompositions. (06marks)
(c) i. What do you understand by the term half-life of the reaction?(01mark)
ii. How would the half-life of the decomposition of the gas A in (b) depend on the initial

(b)Give the explanation as to why an electrolysis process is a redox process?(4marks)


(c) If the acidity constant of ethanoic acid is 1.8ₓ 10-5moldm-3 at 25oC. Calculate the pH of the
solution before and after adding 1.00g of sodium ethanoate to150cm3 of 0.05Methanoic acid.

(d) Derive Ostwald’s dilution law and indicate how it provided a crucial test of the ionic theory
propounded by Arrhenius. (06marks)

4. (a) With examples, give reasons as to why some metal are not extracted by electrolytic reduction
method.(03 Marks)
(b) Explain the following;
i. Although nitric acid is a strong oxidizing agent, it is transported by using aluminium
containers. (02marks)
ii. Common chemical reducing agents have no action on aluminium ore. (02marks)
(c) i. One of the important procedure in extraction of metals is “Calcination and roasting” but not all
metal ore are roasted. Justify this statement. (04marks)
ii. With the aid of chemical equations, describe how tin metal is extracted from stannic oxide
(SnO2)(05marks).
(d) Transition elements and their compounds are used as catalysts. Briefly, explain the attributes of
the transition elements which are responsible for their catalytic activity.(04 Marks)
5. (a) Identify the monomer (s) used to make the following polymer structures:

(c). Classify thefollowing polymers on the basis of action of heat on each

(d) .Polymer whose monomers contain a methyl group and those that contain a carbonyl group are
soluble in organic solvents such as acetone. Which of the two is more soluble? (03marks)
6. (a)Compound F, C3H7Br react with magnesium metal in dry ether and subsequently the mixture of
the reaction was treated with carbondioxide and dilute acid to give compound G whose molecular
formula is C4H8O2. Compound G,turns a blue litmus paper red and liberates carbondioxide gas
from aqueous solution of sodium hydrogen carbonate. When compound F is treated with aqueous
sodium hydroxide it produces, H, which when treated with Iodine in alkaline solution it gives
yellow crystals.
i. Identify compounds F,G and H and write their structural formula (06Marks)
ii. Write the chemical equations for all the reactions involved. (04𝟏⁄𝟐marks).
(b) A hydrocarbon A(C3H6) on reacting with HCl gives compound B (C3H7Cl) which on reactingwith
1mole of ammonia, gives(C3H9N). On treating C with NaNO2 andHCl followed by hydrolysis,
alcohol D is formed. Identify and write structural formula of compound A to D and explain all the
chemical reactions involved.(12𝟏⁄𝟐marks)
