Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear
learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities,
questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you
to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you
step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are
also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on
how they can best help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on
any part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises
and tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.
Thank you.

Target
Sequence plays an important role in our daily lives. Not only in nature, it is often
used as part of our daily routine such as creating designs, analyzing data,
This module will illustrate another type of sequence which is of equal importance
Before you start doing the activities in this lesson, let’s find out how
much you already know about this module by answering the pre-test on the
next page.

In this module, the lesson starts with assessing your prior knowledge on
the different concepts you’ve learned involving arithmetic sequence.

Example 1. Find the next term or the 5th term in the geometric sequence 3, -9, 27,
-81, . . . .
Step 1. Find the common ratio by dividing any term by the preceding term.
3 -9 27 -81
−9 27 −81
= −3 = −3 = −3
3 −9 27
−9
r= = -3
3
Step 2. The next term to -81 is the 5th term so to solve for the fifth term
𝑎5 = 𝑎1 • 𝑟 𝑛−1
= 3 • −35−1
𝑎5 = 243
Therefore, the next term or 5th term in the geometric sequence is 243.
Example 2. Given 𝑎1 = -4 and r = -4, write the first four terms of the geometric
sequence.
Solution:
𝑎1 = -4
𝑎2 = 𝑎1 • r = -4 • -4 = 16
𝑎3 = 𝑎2 • r = 16 • -4 = -64
𝑎4 = 𝑎3 • r = -64 • -4 = 256
Therefore, the first four terms of the geometric sequence are
-4, 16, -64 and 256.
After learning the two types of sequences, arithmetic and geometric, the real
challenge is to determine which sequence shows such. The following examples will
help you unlock the problem as to whether it is an arithmetic or geometric.
Solution:
To identify the type of sequence, you have to compute both the
common difference (d) and common ratio (r).
15
d = 15 – 5 = 10 r= =3
5
45
d = 45 – 15 = 30 r= =3
15
135
d = 135 – 45 = 90 r= =3
45
Since r shows the same result, then the sequence 5, 15, 45, 135, . . . is
geometric.
LU_Q1_Mathematics10_Module2
4
Example 3. Is the sequence -8, -17, -26, -35, . . . an arithmetic or geometric?
Solution:
To identify the type of sequence, you have to compute both the
common difference (d) and common ratio (r).
−17 17
d = -17 – (-8) = -17 + 8 = -9 r= =
−8 8
−26 26
d = -26 – (-17) = -26 + 17 = -9 r= =
−17 17
−35 35
d = -35 – (-26) = -35 + 26 = -9 r= =
−26 26
Since d shows the same result, then the sequence -8, -17, -26, -35, . . . is
arithmetic.
Now that you know the value of d, you can now find the missing term
by adding -7 to its preceding term -12.
Since the sequence is geometric, then we will apply the common ratio
formula to find the value of m.
𝑚+4 3𝑚
r= =
𝑚−2 𝑚+4
𝑚+4 3𝑚
Apply cross-multiplication to =
𝑚−2 𝑚+4
3m(m-2) = (m+4)(m+4)
3m2 – 6m = 𝑚2 + 8m +16
3m2 – 6m - 𝑚2 −8m – 16 = 0
3m2 - 𝑚2 −6m – 8m – 16 = 0
2m2 – 14m – 16 = 0
LU_Q1_Mathematics10_Module2
5
2m2 – 14m – 16 = 0
2
m2 – 7m – 8 = 0
(m – 8)(m + 1) =0
m–8=0 ; m+1=0
m1 = 8 ; m2 = -1
The values of m that will make the sequence geometric are -1 and 8.
